Firefox Hello: How the video chat works in the browser

Firefox Hello is a WebRTC messenger that allows you to communicate with others in a comfortable way – on computers and smartphones (Android, iOS), without login, password or Firefox user account. All you need for Firefox Hello is a microphone, a webcam and the latest version of Firefox (download). In this, Firefox Hello is available immediately, that is, no browser extensions are installed and Firefox Hello does not have to be activated as in previous versions.

If you are not sure whether you have the latest version of Firefox installed, you can easily check this: In the upper right corner of the browser window, click on the menu icon, then in the open menu, click on the help icon below The bottom menu item About Firefox. You can also install the latest version in the upcoming info dialog box.

By clicking on the Firefox Hello symbol (Quickinfo: Surfing with a friend on the page) you can get started right away. Usually it is directly to the left of the menu icon. If you do not see the Firefox Hello symbol, you will find it in the open menu. After clicking Customize, you can add it to the command bar by dragging it with the mouse.

To invite another person to Firefox Hello, click Visit a friend with a friend. Now you need to send a link generated by Firefox, for which three options are possible

Conclusion

The person who receives the invitation opens the link in his browser and clicks Join. After that, he has to allow access to the microphone and camera.

The other user does not necessarily have to use Firefox. Communication with Firefox Hello is possible with any WebRTC-enabled browser. This includes Opera and Google Chrome, but this does not apply to IE and Microsoft Edge.

After joining, the Firefox Hello Icon will take a blue color and you can instantly chat or share messages - the text message input panel is located in the browser's browser at the bottom of the video transfer window Br>

Firefox Hello also shares every web page you call. However, the Invited always sees only the current tab. So if you switch between different tabs, the other will only see the page you are currently on. In addition, the transmission of web pages takes place in one direction only. Pages opened by the invited user can not be found in your browser.

In the video transmission window are icons for switching off the camera and the microphone, and you can call the full screen mode for video transmission. To close a running Firefox Hello session, either click the Cancel button in the browser window, or click the small red button in the upper-right corner of the video transfer window

The interface in the browser window of the invited person looks slightly different. The options for turning off the camera and microphone and leaving the session are located in a separate bar above the transferred web page. On the right is the chat and the video transfer.

The transmission of websites is very fast (this also applies to text messages, of course) and in quite appealing quality. If there are any problems with video transmission, it is best to close the current Firefox Hello session, close the browser, and start a new Firefox Hello session. Note that Firefox Hello is not available in private surfing mode.

Firefox Hello is not to be seen as a competition to messenger programs like Skype, which supports telephony and file transfer. However, it is a welcome feature when it comes to quickly initiating a conversation with friends and acquaintances without having to leave the browser while surfing the Internet together. The transmission of the split web pages is done in slightly better quality and the performance is significantly higher, as one is accustomed, for example, by Skype in the screen transmission.
