Microsoft has stated about two and a half months before the end of the free update phase on Windows 10 that users from July 30 will no longer free of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 can upgrade. Instead, Microsoft will charge for an operating system upgrade. On the Windows blog, Microsoft reveals the estimated costs: According to this, (US) users are to pay a license of Windows 10 Home 119 US dollars. Pricing information for a full pro license or a pure upgrade option was not discussed in the blog post.
What should you do now?
The 119 US dollars are pretty much the same amount as Microsoft announced at the start of Windows 10. According to this, one should already look into the corresponding message from the summer of 2017 to determine the costs for Windows 10. While Microsoft in the US for the home- about 120 and for the pro license named 200 US dollar (in each case plus taxes), the communicated amounts (including value-added tax) in the United States partly much higher. For Windows 10 Home would therefore 135 euros and for Windows 10 Pro 280 euros due. Whether this is true remains to be seen.
If you want to buy a new computer, such as UEFI-Bios, Skylake-based, with M.2-SSD and other modern technologies, then you should put on Windows 10. Only there the support will be ensured. With Windows 7 it can happen on new systems now and then - and in the future probably more often - to problems. In order to benefit from the free update, you should purchase a license for Windows 7 for little money, and you can upgrade it free of charge to Windows 10.
For users who do not want to change, there is also news. Microsoft has confirmed that the sometimes annoying GWX tool that alerts users to Windows 10 will be disabled as of July 30.
