Autofocus test: Conclusion

The Panasonic GH4, with its fast, reliable and precise tracking in three out of four measurement series, was the first to reach the top of the test field. In the remaining fourth discipline, the series recording with single- AF in bright ambient light, absolutely convincing results without a single serious error.

However, a loser emerged just as clearly: the Leica T autofocus did not rely on us in the laboratory. At the very beginning of an AF-C series with very good light conditions, the Leica T reaches a few hits.

All other candidates showed strong strengths as well as weaknesses in the autofocusing - how reliable the tracking system works, was among other things a question of the attitude.

In the case of the Canon EOS 7D Mark II and the Olympus E-M1, the combination of serial mode and continuous autofocus is recommended for moving subjects: despite the higher speed of the chart, the two cameras captured the sharpness in the serial test more accurately than in the series test with single- AF and sharpness priority. Fujifilm X-T1, Nikon D7200 and Sony A6000, on the other hand, were more comfortable with the single-car focus in the series test. This can be attributed to the slower moving chart, but also to the favored use of the single-AF - especially with Fujifilm and Sony, which due to their partly moderately sharp serial images slide backwards in the overall rating.

Also interesting: some autofocus solutions seemed to be more sensitive to light deficiencies than others. For example, the hit rate of Nikon D7200 and Pentax K-3 II dropped significantly in darkened surroundings - especially with single-shot single-AF. The Canon 7D II had fewer problems in the single as well as in the series mode with weak light problems. The Olympus E-M1 and Sony A6000 were less likely to get out of the concept.

In the overall evaluation, the Nikon took 2nd place behind the test winner Panasonic. A good midfield is Canon, Olympus and Pentax - 3rd place. The third is in 4th place Sony and fifth place Fujifilm before the final Leica.
