We explain where you can receive DVB-T and what limitations there are. You can also watch television on the Internet today. Finally, the GEZ demands a “donation” for “new-look radios” – including PCs and laptops. Who has such a device must pay 5.76 euros for each month and can then also watch the TV channels over the Internet – without tools, however, does not go.
TV on the smartphone peek
Whoever manages to conjure up a sensible TV picture on his or her smartphone has a decisive advantage: the smartphone is practically always there - it does not take much space away. In essence, there are two ways to view TV broadcasts on a smartphone. The first option is streaming the TV signal over the Internet. The big drawback with this method is that the picture quality depends strongly on the achieved bandwidth of the radio signal.

Although there are various apps - mainly for iOS and Android, which bring a TV signal to the smartphone. The problem with most is, however, that these apps offer very few American broadcasters, the public-law and the large private broadcasters, on which football games are freely transmitted, are practically never. To the better apps of this genre belongs SPB TV 2.0. It offers over 150 stations from more than 20 countries, but the range of American broadcasters is quite low.
DVB-T signal for iOS devices
A big exception with the smartphone apps is Zattoo, which is mainly known in the PC environment. Zattoo does not work abroad, however, because the company has only the broadcasting rights for the German-speaking countries. Hauppauge offers an internet streaming solution for TV enjoyment on the smartphone for 18 Euro. However, the prerequisite is an already installed digital TV solution from this manufacturer.
Receive DVB-T via laptop
The great alternative is DVB-T. This signal is guaranteed to be not truncated by your mobile phone provider, at most from other users in your receiving cell.
IPhone or iPad users have it bsser than Windows Phone 7 owners. Two manufacturers offer DVB-T receivers for iOS companions. Elgato has the eyetv mobile and the Tivizen in the program. The first is docked directly to the iPhone or iPad and cost about 90 euros.
Tivizen connects via Bluetooth and costs about 110 euros. From Hauppauge, there is the myTV2go-m for about 90 euros. The digital TV receivers can be easily integrated into the iOS operating system via a free app and even offer pleasant additional services, such as a program preview and timeshift with recording. DVB-T sticks are an old but well-bought hat for laptops.
If you want to get a DVT-T-Stick for the laptop, the huge selection is almost overwhelmed. Sticks with only one receiving function are already available for less than 20 Euro in the online shop. These are equipped with antenna, software and usually even with a remote control. More interesting, however, are those TV sticks that can receive more than the DVB-T signal. The TrekStor Terres 2.0 costs around 25 euros and also allows digital and analogue radio reception (DAB +, FM) in addition to the DVB-T TV.
However, you should not make any great demands on the enclosed remote control. Practically synonymous are those DVB-T sticks, which have two TV units, such as the Hauppauge WinTV Duet or the Terratec T5, which incidentally has two antennas also a reasonable remote control. With Dualtun devices it is possible to record one program while viewing another.
The hybrid sticks, which can receive both DVB-T and DVB-C, cost around 100 euros. DVB-T is free and free to receive, but not everywhere - especially in buildings or in the country, the signal often breaks.
The biggest problem with all mobile TV solutions is the juice, so the power supply. Anyone who holds it with Sepp Herberger and assumes that a game takes 90 minutes, is wrong. The battery charge determines whether the game is transferred to the end of the game on your smartphone or laptop. Only the few batteries will have two games with pre- and post-match coverage. Our tip: Always provide a spare battery or at least the display dim. The LC display eats most of the power.
The best thing is, the football fan drives two-track. Zattoo and maybe some smart apps should be loaded in peace on the smartphone. For example, if you sit in a cafe with WLAN, you are independent of the DVB-T signal, which breaks down in buildings. In the city park, on the lake or in the beer garden one can rely on DVB-T reception - either with an iOS device - preferably an iPad - or with the laptop. Then you're always on the safe side and you do not have to do a live transmission because of "technical problems" - as long as the battery keeps.
The battery: The biggest problem
