The future of the analog signal

The agreement comes from the year 2009, but the consequences are slow and almost secretly their way into the devices. If you are looking at newer Blu-ray models, you will usually miss the sight of the YUV jacks. The film and equipment industries have ushered in the “sunset” of analogue outputs.

Digitalproblem Audio

Missing the three small bushes probably hardly anyone. HDMI has long since passed their rank. They were still useful for a smooth transition to the digital world. Once, however, they paved High Definition to the home cinema. It was only with them that home cinema enthusiasts were able to get excited about the super-sharp pictures via beamer or flat-panel monitors.

Analog for high-end music

For copying protection reasons the deserved jacks now disappear. The corresponding agreement comes from the AACSLA (Advanced Access Content System License Administrator). It is already responsible for the fact that component outputs on new Blu-ray models have only been able to output the standard picture point number since the beginning of 2011. As of 2017, this is no longer permitted. Then they have finally departed.

The manufacturers are already reacting to this. Whether cheap or expensive models, in many current players are missing the jacks already. Something is surprising is that the simple composite video jack is still to be found. But otherwise the early reaction is understandable: HDMI has prevailed on all picture machines, and probably no one still prefers analog video of the digital quality. As manufacturers are happy to save money.

Denon had already offered in 2008 a "transporter", which had only HDMI. The relatively unsuccessful idea was only ahead of its time.

And what about the analog audio signals? Is there any danger of the exit? High-Ender would hit the hands over his head. Unlike in the case of the picture, the analogue outputs are still regarded as absolute quality guaranties in the audio area.

This applies in particular to music. Many analogue sockets are synonymous for surround film sound dear and expensive. The reason for the radical digital ostracism: mainly HDMI, but also the optical and coaxial outputs have to deal with jitter problems that affect the sound.

This is due to fundamental inaccuracies in signal transport. Especially HDMI connections have to be encountered with complicated adjustment techniques between players and AV receivers. Pioneer has developed Precision Quartz Lock System (PQLS), Denon knows DenonLink HD. The disadvantage of the two techniques: they only work brand-internal. So you can get only equipment from the manufacturer to the home cinema.

For the analog jacks it is also argued that, in particular, high-end manufacturers are striving to be extremely careful in converting the digital signals into analog signals. Sophisticated computing algorithms as well as fine-tuned player components are the focus. Corresponding Blu-ray players should be mainly music from CDs or SACDs in high-quality form to the amplifier can play. However, the number of customers who want such an audiophile Blu-ray star is very small. Many prefer a solution with a separate CD artist.

Nevertheless, the companies were able to keep the high-end opportunity for their customers: According to the AACS agreement, only analog video outputs have to disappear. With the Audiobuchsen everything remains the same. The providers act accordingly.

Video has afterwards: All companies, which have so far put much emphasis on sound, will continue to offer analog outputs. This is especially true for high-end brands such as McIntosh, Krell or Ayre. The specialists from the lower price classes like Denon - apart from a new transporter - also remain at the analog ball. Marantz product manager Heiko Pantzer says spontaneously out of his guts even: "If one day no analog audio outputs can be left on BD players, we probably will not build any more."

But even if you prefer Blu-ray players of a more simple design, you do not need to change tonally. Whether Samsung, Sony or Panasonic, the well-known connections should be mostly. So for Analog, it is not yet all evening.
