Civilization 6 on Test: Only one more round

Civilization 6: Each part begins with the first city foundation.

City map wants to be learned

With Civilization 6, Sid Meier's strategy classic goes to the next round. Better said: In the next laps. Because even in the sixth part of the successful series, the rounds strategy basic formula is little shaken. As usual, the player in Civilization 6 controls his people from the first Stone Age settlement to the ascent into space.

Small wars get the friendship

On a round-by-round basis, cities are needed to expand and expand cities, explore new technologies, command war forces and assert themselves against other civilizations.

Bugs and sometimes cumbersome operation

The goal is to decide the game by one of the five conditions of victory: domination victory by the subjugation of all other civilizations, science victory by the construction of a Martian colony, cultural success by a high attractiveness for tourists, religious victory by a global religious domination or point victory by most points At the end of the round limit.

Superior soundtrack, useful graphic

Depending on which of the 20 peoples of the players compete, there are advantages and disadvantages for the different conditions of victory. While the Spaniards receive specific bonuses for religious warfare, the Norwegians have advantages in seafaring.

As far as Civilization 6 differs little from its predecessors. However, at the level of cities, Firaxis has introduced a major innovation: the districts. Depending on the technologies studied, there are different specializations - such as the campus for libraries and universities, the holy site for shrines and temples, or the industrial area for workshops and factories.

The districts, as well as new miracles, are placed on the fields around a city. As a result, cities in Civilization 6 take up much more space and are thus more difficult to defend. Because districts and miracles also compete with local resources and receive additional bonuses through the proper arrangement, the expansion of a city requires more planning.

However, it is nice to see how a city spreads by field on the map. Even if the view in modernity can become confusing in several neighboring cities. In total, the districts have succeeded and expand the Civilization series by a new strategic component.

Other new features in Civilization 6 include, among other things, a new government screen that can be filled with different policies, inspirations that speed up the exploration of individual technologies, and a religious system that allows apostles and missionaries to fight each other in fights. To this end, tradesmen and trade systems were revised and cities and city administration adapted.

Overall, Civilization 6 is developing the series well and Civ veterans will find themselves very quickly, with a few exceptions. In an emergency, civilian medicine usually helps. A tutorial is offered for newcomers.

If you do not play in one of the different multiplayer modes, you'll be dealing with AI as an opponent in Civilization 6. This strategy is based on the chosen people and random political agendas.

What sounds good in theory, however, does not yet work satisfactorily in practice. The computer AI is not yet fully developed, and it is always surprising with hard-to-follow actions - for example, when a civilization just befriended suddenly declares war or individual military units are senselessly fired.

By the 2017 Update for Civilization 6, Firaxis has been running the first AI tuning, but the developers should improve here. Since the AI in Civilization 5 has only been refined over time, there is reason to hope. And last but not least, appropriate mods of the community may help.

Conclusion

In general, Civilization 6 notes that the game might have done some weeks more development time. Again and again, there are small bugs from non-clickable notifications to incorrect or missing translations. We also had to observe total crashes of the game.

We also see a certain need for revision in the user interface. Above all the overview screens for one's own civilization are kept very purist in contrast to the game graphics. And the graphics and tables after the game are disappointing. Anyone who has invested more than 20 hours in a game is looking forward to a detailed preparation of the results.

Civilization 6: System Requirements

In terms of the technical foundation, Firaxis has developed a new graphics engine for Civilization 6. This does not ignite effect fireworks, but it offers a good and coherent mixture of detail veriteness and clarity. The same applies to the sound effects in the game, which are not too obtrusive even in longer games.

The soundtrack has really succeeded. What Civilization 6 offers the player here, depending on the age and civilization on musical background, will surely provide for some earwigs. Great is the fact that the developers provide the entire Civilization 6 soundtrack on YouTube also for listening.

Although some bugs and inconsistencies here and there still gloom the gambling experience, but all in all, not only fans of the Civilization series can access the sixth part boldly. The game offers countless hours of fun through its high replay value. Thanks to the new features, it has once again gained in game depth and thus further strengthened the "Only One Round" effect. Follow the fall patch as announced, even more improvements to AI and Balance, then Civilization 6 will have a loyal community for years to come.
