Football World Cup 2017: Experience an App and TV Live Livestream

This has already something: in the fire place glowing glow, far and wide no neighbors. The World Cup party on the forest can get going – Schlaaaaaand! The iPad receives the TV stream and a Bluetooth speaker brings the acoustic stadium atmosphere over to it. Apps like Zattoo Live TV or Magine make it possible: They show the live program of ARD, ZDF & Co. free of charge via any data line, which is fast enough for a smooth video stream.

Limited data quotas

This is more and more TV stations offer themselves: the public-law TV channels, for example, almost stream through the bank their running program also through their Mediatheken apps. And if you're not in the middle of Wallachia, the mobile interception is fast enough for football TV streaming.

At home in the WLAN is all that no problem, as the data flow like a drum without ground through the data line. But on the road in the mobile data network the conditions are different. Here, smartphone and tablet users have a limited monthly data volume. Depending on the agreement, this can range from a few hundred megabytes to one gigabyte per month with a high UMTS (3G) or LTE data rate.

If this inclusive volume is consumed, then the connection is throttled to a lame 64 kilobits per second by the end of the month. For the retrieval of text mail is enough, but not for videos from the net. The throttling can usually be canceled for a fee - with a new data account.

Data volume for a half-time to two games

To find out with which TV streaming service I can celebrate the WM-Grillparty at the Waldspielplatz most likely, I have tried in the Praxistest the different TV streaming services of the two WM stations "Das Erste" and "ZDF". For this I have the current program of the transmitters in each case five minutes in the LTE as well as the 3G network looked at and thereby the accumulated data amounts are logged. This can be used to determine the approximate data rate of the respective stream.

The reason for this is that although all apps were closed in parallel, smaller amounts of data from the operating system of the tablet or smartphone can still be received. They have comparatively low data throughputs, but the result is only precise. I investigated the free offer of Zattoo as well as its payable HiQ variant, as well as Magine and the Livestreams of ARD and ZDF as well as an app called "Live TV", which also streams the program of some channels live

All versions I received at the same, well-equipped mobile network, both via the UMTS / 3G mobile network as well as with activated LTE technology on the iPhone and iPad. From the calculated data rates I then determined the theoretical playing time until an average data volume of one gigabyte is exhausted. The results are in the table above, the conversion for other data quotas is simple: at 500 MB halved, at 2 GB, the playing time doubles until the data brake reaches at the latest. The results speak for themselves: 1 GB is not enough with all streaming offers for a complete football game. Per month.

Only Zattoo offers in its free SD variant on the smartphone such a low data rate that you can stream two times 90 minutes per month - but synonymous without the extension and penalty shoots. The quality could be seen on the iPhone screen nevertheless - no HD-like picture impression, but still sharp enough to follow the ball. On the iPad Zattoo-SD claimed slightly higher data rates - and also provided a correspondingly sharper picture. However, the data volume was only sufficient for a batch, including preliminary and post-reports.

All other live TV transmissions via the Internet look better, but also claim significantly higher data rates - up to the ARD Livestream, which in Praxistest significantly more than 3 Mbps sucked. The HD version of Zattoo on the iPad and the almost makellose, free TV stream by Magine were hardly after. The result: After 40 to 60 minutes the message appears on the screen that the data volume for the month is exhausted - end with Schland, already at the half-time break! With the Telekom the data contingent for 4,95 Euro with another gigabyte can refresh, with other offerings the tariffs are similar. A real data flat rate as with DSL connections is not available in the mobile network.

The fact that the mobile data transmission into money goes, is in itself nothing new. And that TV- and Videostreams not sparingly with the megabytes deal, should also be known. Mobile TV is definitely equal with Pay-TV, even if for the WM, no subscription is necessary with Sky. Alternatives offer the two major network operators. For example, Telekom's customers can view 16 free-TV stations such as Das Erste, ZDF, Pro7, Sat1 or Eurosport via the mobile TV app for EUR 7.50 per month, without the data volume deviating from the contract data quota. When booking in the current month, only the prorated price will be incurred by the end of the month.

So I save myself the additional data package and can watch for heartache - via their own apps on the iPhone or the iPad as well as for Android and Windows Phone devices. The quality was in the praxischeck on the iPhone quite ok, although the picture was often pixelated. For the tablet, however, the image resolution was much more pixelated and blurred than at Zattoo with a good data rate. Telekom-Mobil-TV is also really only in the mobile network and by Telekom customers receivable. You also have to disable the WLAN function at home to start the TV stream.

Vodafone has a similar offer. It is called Vodafone MobileTV, costs 1.49 euros per week and is - ink, drum, fan singing - even during the World Cup even free of charge. The mobile Schland TV, however, hits the contract data quota here. After all, the data rates of mobile TV streams are lower than those of Zattoo, Magine & Co. With one or the four gigabytes integrated in the Vodafone tariff Red L, you can watch a whole lot of games live and on the road. After the World Cup, you should not forget to finish the TV subscription again. That works without a long contract period, but you have to think about it. In contrast to the T-Mobile TV, Vodafone TV also runs in local or public WLAN radio networks.

Alternative: Mobile TV from the provider

Many data, pixelated pictures, high costs - you can turn it and turn as you like, the nightly football party at the grill place goes with tablet or smartphone on the way to the money. Since you can also buy your own tuner. DVB-Tunners like the Elgato Eye TV Mobile do not cost the world. With 60 to 80 euros you are there. The reception is not bad in my experience. All that remains is the question of DVB-T coverage on the ground.

In the immediate vicinity of a sendemast, in the vicinity of almost all larger cities, the reception situation in the open air is usually unproblematic. If you are on the land, you should check the DVB-T operation in advance - the mobile network can leave one as also in the lurch. And one more thing to note: Like the 3G or LTE data reception, the DVB-T tuners also suck massively on the battery of the mobile device. An additional emergency battery should be included when the outdoor football ball rises.

Or rather with the DVB-T tuner?

Durable mobile TV with the tablet works only through the free Zattoo offer with an acceptable data rate and quality - or for Telekom customers with slight quality losses and for 7.50 Euro per month in the mobile TV app of the provider. For the outdoor football party, I'd rather a DVB-T tuner recommend, because even the lowest TV data rates in my comparison claim approximately 500 MB for a single football game. At the same time, this corresponds to the typical inclusive volume in low-cost mobile contracts at Base, Vodafone or T-Mobile.

Who does not want to look quite far out there, but only in the own garden, which extends the range of its WLAN to the outside and streams thus without additional costs and in high data rate. Grilling can be just as good, at night, only the neighbors have to play. But probably they are sitting outside and watching football! We can also go to the forest after the World Cup. Not for football.
