E-mail services in the test duel: GMail vs. GMX Topmail

If you are looking for an e-mail service and compare providers in the test, you may wonder: Is e-mail still necessary in times of Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp? And whether! Probably this year in the United States so many e-mails are sent as never before. A recent study reports more than 537 billion messages – spam is not counted. This would be an increase of six percent compared to 2017. E-mail providers attribute this increase mainly to the increase in mobility. One third user uses e-mail on the smartphone, says GMX.

Google know-how E-mail made in the United States

The fact is, most Germans trust domestic e-mail providers. About a quarter of the citizens has an address of GMX, another quarter uses Web.de. And more than ten percent of Germans do their mail traffic via T-Online. Is it worth spending money on a mail account?

Basic equipment

In order to answer this question, we have the GMX Topmail against the free GMail in our test duel.

More than just e-mail

The E-Mail made in the United States initiative has certainly contributed to the fact that American e-mail providers are so popular. GMX as well as 1 & 1, the Telekom, Freenet, Strato and Web.de have committed themselves to high safety standards. In addition to the encrypted data transmission, the e-mail providers guarantee that data is stored exclusively in the United States and that American data protection standards are adhered to. The members of e-mail made in the United States use only data centers in the United States. In order for users to recognize such messages at the outset, the websites and apps label them with a seal of approval.

Conclusion

In this regard, Google fights against a bad reputation. But this is not always justified. It may be that some Google services collect user data. The basic safety functions of GMail can not be objected. Like GMX, GMail has sophisticated protection mechanisms that detect and destroy malware in incoming and outgoing messages.

GMail is also able to keep up with GMX when it comes to spam control. Both services have self-learning filters that filter unwanted advertising into the spam (GMX) and advertising (GMail) folders. Messages that are not correctly recognized should be assigned to the user so that the spam filters learn faster.

The encrypted data transmission is also essential for e-mail security. GMX and GMail use SSL encryption to retrieve emails both in POP3 and IMAP. For SMTP mail transmission, both STARTTLS, TLS and SSL are available.

GMX uses STARTTLS as default via port 587. If the e-mail program does not support STARTTLS, TLS is automatically activated via port 587. Alternatively, the user can use the SSL encryption via port 465. For GMail, SSL is the default port 465, TLS or STARTTLS can be used via port 587. However, TLS is not as secure as an end-to-end encryption, such as PGP. STARTTLS is less secure than TLS because it allows for unencrypted transfers in protocol errors.

Long story, short: GMX users should use TLS instead of STARTTLS for SMTP, if possible

That GMX in the duel with GMail receives more security points, it owes only to the option De-Mail. De-Mail is a legally binding system that guarantees verifiable and confidential online communication. The sender and recipient of the e-mails are clearly identifiable. Therefore, anyone who reserves a de-mail address must identify themselves.

Lesetipp: Encrypt emails, messengers and telephony

GMX scores with this option - mainly because the sending of simple de-mails is free of charge. Other services require high fees. An additional feature of De-Mail is digital mail, where the sender receives a legally binding delivery confirmation. For GMX, a registered mail costs 78 cents.

E-mail security is important, which is why we give up to 25 out of 100 points. We have only rated the basic services, such as the available space for e-mails and the number of addresses. The test candidates for e-mail functions can reach up to 50 points.

Our test reveals big differences between the three GMX rates FreeMail, ProMail and TopMail. The free-of-charge FreeMail offer offers a maximum of 1.5 GB of storage space for e-mails, which means that there are several evaluation points compared to ProMail (5 GB), TopMail (at least 10 GB) and GMail (15 GB for emails and data). No question: whoever gets a lot of mail and has to remove read e-mails for a long time needs more than 1.5 GB of disk space.

The same is true for the number of e-mail addresses. With ProMail, the customer receives 10 addresses with GMX extensions, and with TopMail even 50 GMX addresses. So many addresses are practical when the account is used by several family members or at the same time for private and business purposes. In addition, 20 other addresses with fun endings such as hab-verschlafen.de are available in all GMX tariffs.

Anyone who logs in at GMail gets exactly one email address. Little is known that Google can use as many aliases as possible. The trick is to put a plus sign behind the front part of the e-mail address and then add the desired string. Max. For example, mustermann@gmail.com can use max.mustermann+ebay@gmail.com for eBay.

Tip: By filtering by recipient, the e-mails are automatically sorted into folders or as spam. Nevertheless, GMX wins TopMail against GMail in the test rubric basic equipment. GMX scores for example with its POP3-Sammeldienst. It can retrieve messages from up to 20 other e-mail accounts - GMail retrieves a maximum of five external mailboxes. Date attachments may be up to 100 MByte with GMX TopMail, with GMail maximally 25 MBytes.

GMX and GMail offer much more than just e-mail. In addition to storage space for messages, there is storage space for data that can be used differently. For example, files received as an e-mail attachment can be cached online, just like data from your computer.

GMX separates the storage space for data from that for e-mails: GMX FreeMail has two GB, ProMail 5 GB, TopMail 10 GB. GMail offers a total of 15 GB of storage space for e-mails and data, there is no separation. The American and American services also differ when accessing the data store.

While GMX allows WebDAV to address the web store as a local drive, Google relies on its drive apps. One advantage of Drive is that it can be extended (paid). For 1.99 US dollars monthly the customer receives 100 GB of storage space. In the test, GMail also scores thanks to Google Docs. The online office works perfectly with GMail and Drive. If, for example, you receive a Word document as an e-mail attachment, you can edit it in the browser, save it online, or redirect it.

More than just e-mail - we mean SMS, MMS and fax. These functions make GMX a kind of communication center. Because GMail does not provide SMS or MMS functionality and allows fax reception and transmission via external fax services, it loses a few evaluation points.

Even with GMX FreeMail you can send up to ten free SMS each month if you decide to sign up for the upgrade. In return, however, you sometimes get advertising by mail or SMS. The fax function is useful, but only GMX TopMail offers the free shipping of up to ten faxes a month. The tariff has its own fax number.

GMX or GMail? Since there are three tariffs of GMX, the comparison is not quite easy. And because free, paid services are compared, the costs must not be ignored. However, if you leave them out, there is a clear winner of the duel: GMX TopMail with 92 out of 100 points

Whether the monthly expenses of 4.99 euros are worth depends mainly on the usage behavior. Who communicates extensively via e-mail, has to send very large files, SMS and faxes, invests well in GMX TopMail. For many private users, the free offers GMX FreeMail (42 of 100 points) and Google GMail (66 of 100 points) should be sufficient. Compared to FreeMail, GMail is certainly the more innovative service, one can see from the missing option de-mail.
