The best DSLRs with APS-C sensor: Top 5 of the best

The Nikon D7200 and Sony A77 II are among the best DSLRs with the APS-C sensor.

DSLR purchase: APS-C- vs. Full-format sensor

Digital SLR cameras have a decisive advantage over compact cameras: their image sensors are clearly superior to the tiny recording chips of the compact digital cameras in terms of image quality, regardless of the resolution. The resolution of current DSLRs is between 12 and 36 million pixels.

But also twelve megapixels of an older SLR camera usually look much better than the 24 megapixels of a compact. And also within the DSLR league applies: the larger the image sensor, the more light-sensitive, less noise, more precise and ultimately better the imaging performance.

When looking at medium format sensors from the professional cameras of Hasselblad, Leica and Pentax, so-called full-format sensors are the first choice when it comes to making high-quality images even in relatively poor light conditions. They are so called because they are the same size as a recording on 35 mm x 36 mm film

However, as the size increases, the sensors are also significantly more expensive to manufacture. Current DSLR models in the amateur segment therefore generally use a sensor in about half the size, the so-called APS-C format (area about 22.5 mm x 15 mm). Depending on the manufacturer and camera model, the area as well as the name may vary. Nikon calls sensors of this size about DX format.
