Last fall, Sony brought the first compacts with a back-lit CMOS sensor: In this test, the next Sonys and the first Ricoh with backlight technology are coming, Nikon’s version is coming soon.
The idea: The 1 / 2.4 inch small sensor is installed with the back in front of the camera, so that its front line and control elements are no longer in the way of the incident light. As a result, the sensor provides a greater light-sensitive surface for the same dimensions, which should result in a better image quality especially at higher ISO values. Disadvantages are the high production costs.
