Ricoh WG-4 GPS test - outdoor camera

The Ricoh WG-4 GPS is part of the WG series, which offers outdoor feeling at a good value for money. Once launched as Pentax, the models like the new WG-4 are now under the Ricoh label. But stay in the family. The camera surface has several grippy structures made of different materials. With 235 grams, the Ricoh WG-4 GPS is easy to hold in any position. Compared to her predecessors, however, she has not become more beautiful and still looks like a sneaker. But this is, of course, taste.

The buttons on the camera rear side of the Ricoh WG-4 GPS have a diameter of 6 mm - just big enough for an outdo camera. They do not require a little more powerful pressure to prevent accidental actuation. The key names can hardly be seen from some angles. The key surface is embossed and is so powerful that it makes the printed identification of the keys illegible when viewed obliquely.

Conclusion

The menu of the Ricoh WG-4 GPS provides three sub-areas, the desired positions are displayed in each of these three areas. The camera does not remember the last setting. The so-called "green button" provides a remedy for this tough procedure. This key can be used to move different menu items. Thus, these positions are reached and set much faster than the rest of the extensive menu.

The four-way button is set to MODE. This is not only the mode "P" for program automation, but an abundance (exactly 28) of presets for certain shooting situations. Why the "Face Detection" function is activated after each time the Ricoh WG-4 GPS is switched on again does not open up easily. Twelve menu items must be scrolled every time to disable this feature.

The 3-inch display of the Ricoh WG-4 GPS has 153,333 pixels in the 16: 9 aspect ratio, which is rather unusual for photography. However, the entire monitor width is only used for the video function. In the photo mode, the effective image size is only 48 x 38 mm, symbols are displayed on the rest of the monitor surface during recording as well as playback. The font size can be selected in the menu, standard and large are available.

The zoom lens of the Ricoh WG-4 GPS covers a range of 25 to 100 mm (KB) and is therefore for a camera with internal focusing in the normal range. On the other hand, light intensity is extraordinary. It starts with 2.0, with the long focal range it drops to 4.9. For the small size of Outdoorkameras is however all honor worth. The small, small lens systems that are used on this price range simply set limits.

The six LEDs for macro recordings arranged around the lens are smart and in practice really good to use, especially as the integrated flashes of compact cameras are close to each other and are more harm than good.

The entire processing of the Ricoh WG-4 GPS is designed for robustness. This is not only optically signaled, also the covers close clean and are secured by two slides. The thread insert for the tripod is unfortunately far too far to the outer edge of the camera. The small, lightweight stands, designed for use on compact cameras, tilt over. The GPS helps to locate the recorded images at a later time.

In the picture quality, the Ricoh WG-4 GPS does not slip, but does not tear to cheering storms. With ISO 125 it is OK in the wide angle, in the tele it should already be something more. There is the picture quality with all sensitivities in the face of the 100 mm KB nevertheless manageable focal length not really tingling. The autofocus is at 0.59s wide angle and 0.63 at telephoto in the rear midfield.

The Ricoh WG-4 GPS is a rugged outdo camera with good features. The image quality is good only at ISO 100 in the wide angle, with increasing focal range and sensitivity it quickly goes into the cellar.
