Hidden Windows 7 features

Damn it! Where is the menu bar in Windows Explorer and in the browser remained, so where are the entries “File”, “Edit” and “View”? The answer and solution are simple: Windows 7 hides it by default, but with the touch of the “Alt” key, everything is back.

TIP 1: From download to DVD

This tiny thing is just one of many features that Microsoft hides in the current Windows. Sometimes it is only a different arrangement, which makes it difficult to find XP users who are long-time. But there are also a lot of new things that have been added to Windows 7 and, in some cases, are only too well hidden.

TIP 2: The integrated voice recognition

Our tips on the following pages reveal how to find and activate such hidden features. But not everything is hidden somewhere. Many useful functions are still missing in the current operating system. That's why we've given you a dozen useful tools for Windows everyday.

TIP 3: Music, Pictures and Videos

There was no previous version of Windows: For the first time in Windows 7, a

CD or DVD download without burning the associated discs. If you downloaded and saved such an ISO file from the Internet, right-click on it.

In the context menu, after you have inserted a CD or DVD blank in the burner, select "Open with / Windows Burner for disk images / burning".

Did you know that a voice recognition is integrated in Windows 7? It works even surprisingly well, and a control of the calculator is also in it: An expression like "double-click on Word" starts the word processing without any mouse click.

After connecting the microphone (in the notebook it is usually integrated), click on "facilitated operation / voice recognition / start speech recognition" in the system control. Now, you are guided by an assistant through all the steps of the setup including training. This takes around 30 minutes and is quite fun.

If you have everything set up, start the dictation program via "All Programs / Accessories / Facilitated Operation / Windows Speech Recognition". A pinned menu will appear at the top of the screen. Click on the microphone symbol. As soon as the status message "Listen" appears, you can dictate.

After a while, you have memorized the most important dictation commands, and Microsoft lists them on their website.

The Media Streaming feature complements content sharing via the home network group (Tip 3). This allows images, videos and music to be transferred to the TV with network connection and webradios. Enable this streaming feature by enabling the home network group to "Stream your images, music, and videos to all devices on your home network."

After clicking the "Select Media Streaming Options" function, set each device on the network to what is to be transferred. Windows automatically detects all devices on the home network.

Network - this sounds like IP addresses and complicated configuration. However, in Windows 7, Microsoft has introduced the "home network" to simplify the release of data or a printer at home. Set up a home network group by clicking Start / Control Panel / Network and Internet / Homegroup / Homegroup.

TIP 5: Burning data to CD or DVD

Choose which elements you want to share, ie pictures, music, documents or printers. This creates the home network group. Use the "Print password and instructions" button to print the automatically assigned password. If you now call the "Home network group" function on another PC on your network, it automatically recognizes that a group already exists.

All you need to do is click on "Join now" and decide which data should be available to the other PC. After you type the password, you will join the home network. In Windows Explorer, you will see the other computer under the "Homegroup" link.

TIP 6: Burning alternatives

Insert a CD or DVD blank in the burner and select the "Burn files to disk" task in the automatic query. In the next step you assign a label for the data carrier and determine whether the blank is to be fixed after burning ("With a CD / DVD Player") or whether you want to write data later ("Like a USB flash drive") .

Now drag the data into the explorer window of the burner drive and press the "Burn to disk / Next" button at the top. This is all, the CD or DVD is now being burned.

There are two options for burning videos to DVD: Open Windows Media Player and click the Burn tab in the upper right corner. After dragging the footage to the right into the firing bar and pressing the Start Burn button, create a data disc with the videos, primarily for playback on the PC.

TIP 7: Solve problems with the beamer

TIP 8: Icons and font too small

TIP 9: The Mobility Center

TIP 10: If the Bitlocker tool is missing

TIP 11: Windows System Backup

Alternatively, after inserting the DVD blank, use the option "Burn DVD-Video Disc". Click "Select Photos and Videos" to create a DVD that runs on any DVD player.

Use Add Elements to select the movie or movies and continue with "Continue / Burn". Re-encoding the footage takes some time. After that, Windows burns the DVD.

When connecting a projector to the notebook is the fear of the right representation almost standard: Is the image projected correctly or not? With the Windows 7 Mobility Center, you can forget the search for the right hardware-specific keys on the notebook.

Press the two buttons "Windows" + "x" to call the mobility center. Click on "Connect Monitor" and select where you want the image to appear: "Computer Only", "Double", "Advanced" or "Projector Only."

The computer automatically adjusts the screen resolution to the external monitor or beamer. If this is not possible, you will see a manual correction.

On monitors with high resolution, font and desktop icons are unfortunately displayed as small. You can change the icon size, however, by pressing the "Ctrl" -key at the bottom left of the keyboard and turning the scroll wheel backwards with the mouse.

If you want to change the font size, right-click on a vacant place on the desktop and select the "Customize" entry in the context menu, followed by "Display / Set custom text size". Set the size here.

The monitor options in the Windows Mobility Center ("Windows" + "X") we have already explained in the previous tip. In addition to the settings for brightness, runnability, WLAN connection, and sync center for data synchronization between two PCs, other important functions for mobile PCs are centrally combined in one place.

Only on such devices, which support this, the "Screen orientation" option appears. This function turns the monitor image of a tablet PC from portrait to landscape and vice versa. The iRotate tool allows you to rotate the monitor image quickly on any computer.

The Microsoft Bitlocker program encrypts the contents of important files from unauthorized access. Even with data loss or theft, no one can do anything with your data, because your data is missing your personal password.

However, you will probably find this encryption on your computer in vain because Microsoft has integrated the feature into the Ultimate and Enterprise version of Windows 7 only. In the popular home variants, however, they are missing.

As a secure and easy-to-use alternative for the home variants of Windows 7, we recommend the Truecrypt program. Once encrypted, sensitive data can only be read again after entering the personal access code.

In the previous Windows Vista, this function was still missing in the home versions - and thus on virtually all home computers: the Windows backup. This is a backup of an entire hard disk partition. Unlike the directory-based backup, the Windows backup saves the entire drive with operating system, installed programs, and all settings.

From this so-called image, the original computer can be restored in any case - via a boot CD even if Windows does not start anymore. You can start the Windows Backup from "All Programs / Maintenance / Backup and Restore / Create System Image."

Windows then suggests a suitable drive for the backup, such as an external hard drive. Click on "Next / Start Backup" to create the system image. Click "All Programs / Maintenance / Backup and Restore / Restore System Settings on Your Computer / Advanced Recovery Methods / Use a previously created system image ..." to restore the saved state.

Conveniently and without the need for further hardware, can be also faxed "Fritzbox", thus with one of the widespread DSL rout of AVM.

The "Windows - Fax and Scan" function performs a shadow typing. If you connect a modem to the telephone line (this also works with DSL), you can send and receive faxes with your computer. Of course, this also works with printers that have a fax function integrated with multi-function devices. A list of compatible devices can be found on the Internet.

If Windows 7 is installed on your computer in the 64-bit version, it is recommended to check whether the program runs on this operating system variant before installing older software.

To do this, start the Online Compatibility Center. In the search box, type the name of the program. Be sure to click "64-bit version of Windows 7" in the "System Type" tab at the top left of the results page.
