Interview: Markus Hortenstein, Maxdome

Video-HomeVision: Maxdome is accessible on more and more Smart TVs. Looking into the future: Are there brands that Maxdome will not be represented in a year?

"Best Movie Portal on TV"

Markus Härtenstein: We are in talks with all the relevant equipment manufacturers and therefore good things that we will be present on most of the hybrid devices of the new product lines in a year.

Video-HomeVision: Since its launch in 2006, Maxdome has always offered set-top boxes for watching TV on TV. Why are there no more Maxdome boxes now?

Markus Härtenstein: Our most important goal is to position Maxdome as the best entertainment portal on the TV in the living room. That is why, when the equipment market was not yet so far, we have, as it were, forced our own set-top boxes with partners. It is, however, more efficient to set partnerships with CE manufacturers.

Therefore, we are very satisfied with the development of the market, so that all relevant equipment manufacturers now offer hybrid end devices. The partnerships with Samsung, LG, Philips, Toshiba, Panasonic and many more give us the opportunity to concentrate fully on our core business, the actual VoD service.

Video-HomeVision: How much is the share of users on the TV to the customers watching movies on the computer and watching them and how do they evolve?

Markus Härtenstein: The technical range of hybrid TVs is developing at an astonishing pace as all major manufacturers rely on the advantages of Internet-enabled terminals. Although we are feeling an increase in the use of our equipment cooperation, the main use is still on the computer or laptop. We strongly believe that the balance of use will shift significantly in favor of the TV sets in 2012.

Video-HomeVision: What other ways of distribution Maxdome plans for the future - will there be also smartphone apps?

Markus Härtenstein: We are looking forward to soon on mobile devices - as a third product line next to web and TV. However, we are now the first place to reach our customers where they are used to watching films and series. This is the TV in the living room. However, we are also developing our offer in the direction of apps and will be taking appropriate steps in 2012.

Video-HomeVision: The menu of Maxdome is much simpler on the TV than on the computer. Competitors like Apple TV, Videoload or Acetrax offer partly more complex surfaces. Are there plans to develop the Maxdome menu on the TV?

Markus Härtenstein: According to our understanding, the use of the TV must be as simple and convenient as possible: the viewer is accustomed to television by a simple operation; on the other hand, navigation with the remote control requires a simple menu preparation. Our TV client is therefore designed very simply.

Video-HomeVision: On DVD and BD there are movies with 5.1-Kinoton and original version under subtitles to choose from. When will there be these features at Maxdome?

Markus Härtenstein: The majority of German-speaking users are accustomed to consume series and feature films synchronized. In order to meet all consumer wishes, however, we now offer more and more films and series in the original sound.
