We reveal how you make a speedport router by firmware modding to the Fritzbox: Often a Fritzbox in the speedport router of the Telekom. With a few tricks Freetz can be installed on it. Freetz is an alternative, extended firmware for the Fritzbox (freetz.org).
1.Create a virtual machine
The advantage: a newer firmware is safer, more powerful and more powerful. In many cases, SpeedPort routers correspond to AVM Fritzboxen 7170/7270 or even newer.
2.Start the installation script in the virtual machine
Caution: These operations can damage the router irreparably. Therefore, only users who are willing to experiment should follow these instructions for a second router.
3.Install installation to your environment
It is therefore sensible to convert only an older second model, which can be broken in the worst case. But in the normal case it can be used as a second router, for a separate WLAN network or as a NAS.
4. Configure firmware for your router
In order to equip Speedport routers with a FritzOS, you need the free virtual Linux computer Speed-to-Fritz-VM, which runs in a free virtual environment - e.g. Oracle VirtualBox or VMWare Player. We will now describe the processes with the VMware Player as Speed-to-Fritz VM is optimized for the VMware Player.
However, you can also use VirtualBox. You can find a corresponding manual on this website bit.ly/1h9FCWo. To prepare the router, make sure that the computer on which you installed the VMware Player is connected to the Internet. Only at the end is the optimized firmware to the router played.
Now install VMware Player. Unzip the archive of the virtual Ubuntu machine, for example with 7-Zip. Open VMware Player, and select Open a Virtual Machine as the option. Then select the VMDX file that you have unpacked. Allow the virtual machine to start and select I copied it when VMware Player asks you about the type of virtual machine.
Run the virtual machine. This can take some time. If you are wondering if VMware Player should download VMware Tools for Linux from the Internet, please confirm this message. The virtual Ubuntu computer runs much faster then. On the first start, VMware Player partially checks the virtual disk. Complete the scanning process.
After the speed-tofritz-Ubuntu's interface is started, you will find the script that directs the firmware to the router: start-freetz.sh. Double-click this file. If the program is not already running, select Open from the context menu. Answer the start of the tool with "Y".
Then you must enter a password. Here you can use "box". Then the tool prepares some programs for updating the box. If you get error messages in the window that the tool can not download files, use the small black icon at the bottom of the window to open a new command line window. You must enter the new download location of the files in the script configuration file.
To do this, switch to the directory of the desktop with the cd desktop in the command line window (Caution, upper and lower case). Type sudo gedit. If you are asked for a password, enter "box". In the gedit program, click Open. Select the key combination CTRL + H to display the hidden files in the window. Open the file.download_speed-to-fritz.sh on the desktop of the virtual machine. Change the address at line 17 as
Svn co https://svn.code.sf.net/p/
Freetzlinux / code / trunk / speed-to-fritz
5.Create the appropriate image for your router
Speed-to-fritz
Save the file and close the command-line window. Start the script start-freetz.sh again as described. Now the data should be easy to download.
Which router?
After the tool has done its work, the interface starts to create the customized firmware for the Speedport router. Use the arrow keys to move through the menu, and the space bar to confirm an option. The range of router TYPE is important. Here you select the Speedport router, which you want to equip with the new firmware. All other settings are optional, and you do not have to make any adjustments. When everything is configured, close the window with Exit and confirm the changes. To do this, use the right arrow key
Then the tool loads further data from the Internet and prepares the right image for your Speedport router. Therefore, it is important that the Ubuntu virtual machine always has an Internet connection. After the process is complete, you must press Enter to confirm some additional actions ("Image Extracted" / "Ready for packing"). After this, the tool performs further actions on the firmware.
If the message "Flashing firmware image" finally appears, connect the Speedport router directly to the computer with a network cable so that it can directly contact the router. By default, a Speedport router has address 192.168.2.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. It is best to change the IP address of the Speedport router to 192.168.178.1. This is the default IP address of Fritzboxes.
6.What if something does not work?
In the settings of the network card that is connected to the speed port, you configure a static IP address that allows you to communicate with the speed port. You should confirm the Enter message on the virtual machine only when the connection is established and you come to the management interface with the web browser.
If you get the message that the Speedport router needs to restart, turn it off and then on again. The tool detects the process and then copies the new firmware to the router. You can see the status in the window
When the process is complete, you will receive a corresponding confirmation. You can now close the Command Line window. Reconnect to the speedport router via the address "fritz.box". It should now appear the new interface of AVM. You need to re-setup the router, e.g. With the access password of the DSL or cable operator.
If the operations do not work, try again. This often helps. In the worst case, use the tool ruKernelTool to restore the old firmware on the Speedport router. With the graphical interface in Windows, you can easily perform recovery if the firmware update has caused problems.
