Afterwards, the company’s open web portals, which are filled with more and more content, are open to the user. Video on Demand via Acetrax, Maxdome or Videoload offer many of the new Blu-ray players – a feature that remained the TVs last year. Panasonic and Samsung use Acetrax, LG Maxdome, Philips Videoload and Sony’s own portal Qriocity.
On the Internet at home
The often poor quality of online clips, for example from YouTube, are also borne by the manufacturers. Sony uses an "IP Noise Reduction" to minimize the highly visible artifacts. And Panasonic is using the proven technologies for DVD source scaling.
In other respects there is a lot of things going on in the Internet. In Samsung's Apps Galery, you can download additional applications, such as games. Panasonic and Sony offer video calling via Skype. The manufacturer Philips, which also allows free surfing on the Internet, even makes it possible to connect a keyboard via USB.
In addition almost every player gets media from the home network. As a DLNA client, they access video, pictures and music from network servers. Panasonics players are now also DLNA renderers. Via a controller software, which he installs on his smartphone, the user can select files on a server and send them to the player.
The smartphone as a control center is becoming increasingly popular anyway. Nearly all TV manufacturers now offer apps or these are planned. In addition to Apple's product world with iPhone and iPod touch, Android is becoming more and more interesting for manufacturers. Sony and LG already offer apps for Google's operating system, for example.
Trend: 3D
3D technology, the trend theme in the last year, is almost already the basic equipment in 2011. Only the best entry-level models still dispense with the stereoscopic reproduction of the 3D disks. Some manufacturers like Samsung and Panasonic equip their players with a conversion of 2D content to 3D. However, the quality of the three-dimensional images is not the same as that of the real 3D material, as with the TVs.
Panasonic even allows a 3D depth setting. This allows the player to be optimally adapted to the screen size of the TV and its own preferences.
Them: Load times
A problem, which was still serious with the first Blu-ray players, should be final in 2011: the long loading times of Blu-rays. Virtually all manufacturers advertise at higher speeds. In the test of the Samsung BD-D6900, we were able to determine record-breaking 13 seconds.
Also the first measurements of the start times of the players promise top values. Nine seconds were required for the Samsung with the quick-start mode turned off until it was high and the home menu appeared.
In order to give their customers a fast film enjoyment, many manufacturers use a trick: the disc tray is extended even before the operating system is fully started. Power consumption in standby remains as low as in the previous year's models.
Conclusion: More 3D, design and network: These are the big trends in the new Blu-ray models. At the same time, prices are falling as fast as flat-screen TVs. A player with almost all new features is already available for 200 euros and can thus upgrade his TV. HDTV tuner and good analog sound cost extra.
