Nikon D4 in the RAW test

Nikon’s 6,000 euros expensive counterpart to the EOS 1Dx is specifically designed to meet the needs of professional reportage and sports photographers. The Nikon D4 has a high standard image (10.1 to 10.2 B / s) and an autofocus speed (0.24 sec. Delay) and a robust, highly-sealed magnesium housing, including a high-speed handle, a second key set and a LAN cable connection. In favor of better picture quality with low light, Nikon does not rely on high-altitude flights at resolution and uses a full-format 16-megapixel sensor.

Image quality

The change from JPEG to the raw data format leads only with few cameras so consistently to better test results as with the Nikon D4. Although the resolution is not quite as high as the full-format with 20 or more megapixels at 1,613 to 1,678 LP / BH, it is very good for a 16-megapixel camera and usually around 200 LP / BH higher than in the JPEG test

Deadlines and dynamics also increase (DL: up to 1,188 LP / BH, dynamics: up to 10.7 stops), both the loss of texture (0.2 to 0.3 kurtosis) and the noise disturbances appear to be dampened (0.3 to 0,9 VN to ISO 3,200).

Note: This is the RAW test of the Nikon D4, which focuses solely on the image quality of the camera in RAW mode (more about our test procedures and the new RAW test). For all technical details of the camera and a comprehensive review, including the evaluation of processing and operation, read our JPEG test of the Nikon D4.
