Sigma dp Quattro announced: camera trio with new foveon sensor

“Quattro” is the name for the new generation of the layered Foveon sensor without color and low-pass filters. For the newly developed sensor of the dp Quattro, Sigma calls a total pixel number of 33 megapixels and a resolution of about 29 megapixels. It is a 4: 1: 1 ratio of a blue-sensitive layer with 20 megapixel resolution (5.424 x 3.616 pixel maximum resolution in the area) and a green and red layer of 4.9 Megapixel (2,712 x 1.808) additional color resolution. This is supposed to lead to smaller image files, faster image processing and less power consumption, according to a 30 percent increase in image resolution and unchanged color quality.

Price and availability

The 23.5 x 15.7 mm Foveon sensor in the APS-C format is used in the Sigma models dp1 Quattro with 2.8 / 19 mm objective (28 mm KB), dp2 Quattro with 2, 8/30 mm (45 mm KB) and dp3 Quattro with 2.8 / 50 mm (75 mm KB). The data of the lenses correspond to those of the previous Sigma DP cameras. The fixed focal lengths, the Quattro sensor and the newly developed "Dual True III" image processor (T hree-layer R esponsive U ltimate E ngine) are to be optimally coordinated with each other. Sigma confidently promises "at any time and everywhere image quality at medium format".
