POWER8: Open-Server innovation model from IBM

IBM is announcing new Power Systems servers based on OpenPOWER’s open server platform. With these systems, the rapidly increasing amount of data from data centers can be managed at a previously unknown speed and new workloads can be realized.

Power Systems Scale-Out Server: New Efficiency for Scale-Out-Computing

The new IBM PowerSystems scale-out servers have been designed specifically for big-data tasks and developed on the basis of IBM Power8 technology for the era of huge amounts of data. US $ 2.4 billion of investment, the three years of development, and hundreds of IBM patents as the basis of the systems are evidence of the efforts to increase customer satisfaction through higher-value and open-end technologies.

"This announcement marks the first breakthrough in high-end server technology with radical technological changes and the full support of an open server ecosystem, both of which can accompany our customers on their way to the era of huge amounts of data and complexity." Tom Rosamilia, senior vice president, IBM Systems and Technology Group.

There is no longer a "one-size-fits-all" approach to scale-out a data center. Through our partnership with the OpenPOWER Foundation, the IBM POWER8 processor is a catalyst for new applications and an open innovation platform.

The innovation for the OpenPOWER Foundation, an open computing platform for everyone, is based on IBM's POWER architecture. In December 2013 the merger, representing 25 global technology providers, was founded by IBM, Google, NVIDIA, Mellanox and Tyan. The association now indicated a timetable providing detailed information on the planned amounts of its members. The currently announced IBM Power Systems are the first systems based on OpenPOWER technology.

Scale-out servers are designed to improve the efficiency of today's data centers, including space requirements, power supply and cooling, combined with high quality and utilization. IBM promises an above-average workload performance at 65 percent on all its scale-out servers. IBM Scale-Out servers can provide an approximate halving of data center space requirements by comparing their current x86-based commodity systems with doubled data throughput.

The five new scale-out POWER8 servers, which will be available on June 10, include the PowerSystems S812L and S822L servers, two Linux-only systems. The PowerSystems S814, S822 and S824 servers provide users with the flexibility to use Linux, AIX and IBM i operating systems.
