Augmented Reality: What is possible and how it works

The smartphone game Pokémon GO is just the tip of the iceberg. Augmented Reality (AR), to American extended reality, is already much further and according to the standards of the computer industry is not really new. Do you know the football game analysis from the television, in which the directions of the players, playing field zones and the like are marked on the playing field? This is already an extended reality. The solutions come from companies like Vizrt. With their software, Werbelogos can also be projected onto the playing field, as if they were coined in the lawn. Another AR sample from television is election reports, where the percentage columns are growing out of the ground using ARs in the middle of the studio.

Serious applications

Examples of applications are also available outside of the TV studio. Thus the Kosmos publishing house already published a book entitled iT-Rex in 2017. Accompanying the title, there are apps for Android and iOS. With this app, you can point the camera of the mobile device to the book and see, for example, a three-dimensional dinosaur burst out of a box.

Augmented Reality is not just something for the entertainment industry. Volkswagen announced at the end of 2017 that some of the employees are now working with data glasses. In the glasses, the employees see necessary information about the parts with which they work. The software of the glasses can also read barcodes and correct correct parts green as well as wrong parts red. The Bosch project Connected Workshop (networked workshop) comes from the same branch. Here the mechatronics expert can see on his tablet thanks to augmented reality how the parts of an engine are properly mounted.
