Edge vs. Firefox & Chrome: How good is the Windows 10 browser?

When Windows 10 officially launches in July 2017, it also includes Edge, Microsoft’s new browser. With the new software, Microsoft wants to finally find connection to Chrome and Firefox.

Design and User Management

It's high time, because the last edge of the Edge predecessor Internet Explorer was only as the browser, which one uses, because one does not know better, or nothing else can install. In terms of functionality, configurability and the learning of new web standards, he fell further and further behind the competition. Not to mention its chronic security problems.

Functionality

So far, Edge is only available as part of the Windows 10 Technical Preview. Our contribution is based on version 15.10130.0.0. Of course it is potentially unfair to test a software that is still in beta status, such as Edge, against established competitors. But with regard to design, user guidance and functional scope, there are so few jumps to be expected shortly before the publication. We expect improvements primarily in working speed, compatibility with standard web techniques and resource consumption.

Configurability

Little program interface, plenty of space for displaying web content - this is the design maxim of all major browser manufacturers in recent years.

Edge is the exception to the rule. Compared to Internet Explorer 11 under Windows 8.1, the controls occupy around 30 percent more space. The tabs are now over instead of the address field, which makes the overview easier for many tabs. Overall, Edge is more generous with the screen space. The touch-screen operation benefits from the fact that mouse users are less likely to enjoy.

Lesetipp: Edge in the first test

Edge appears in the modern look of a Windows app. In comparison, Chrome and Firefox seem a bit old-fashioned. They were developed as classic desktop programs and not as Windows apps. Better for mouse users.

Standard features such as bookmarks, browser history, and private mode offer Edge just like Chrome and Firefox. In addition, Microsoft highlights three new features

Chrome and Firefox are all about the fact that they can be extensively configured and expanded with additional features. This allows everyone to configure exactly the browser they need. And Edge?

The good first: Microsoft has announced Edge will expand. Three examples were demonstrated, including a Reddit add-on, which facilitates navigation on the site of the same name. Developers should be able to publish their Firefox and Chrome add-ons with zero effort for Edge. So Microsoft wants to get the enormous backlog in the matter of AddOn diversity under control. But all of this is not to be seen at the start of Edge with Windows 10. Extensions has postponed Microsoft until further notice.

Rather, Edges is also cutting edge in the possibilities of adjustment. This is not only compared to Chrome and Firefox, but even with regard to Internet Explorer 11. Not even sensitive, such as access to the site, security settings, Autocomplete, or the potentially compromising favorite websites displayed on new tabs can be set.

Whether Edge is really a new browser, it can be discussed. Edge is based on a core component of Internet Explorer, the Trident rendering engine. This is, on the one hand, reasonable, completely new developments among software experts are regarded as particularly risky projects. On the other hand, there is a risk that the new browser will also carry ballast that you would actually want to get rid of.

Probably also for this reason the Microsoft developers will not be tired to emphasize how many Internet Explorer functions they have thrown overboard to rebuild Trident to the new rendering engine, which is also called Edge. ActiveX, DirectX filter, VBScript and much more were flying out - several hundred thousand lines of code. The latest technology, such as support for Web audio, Web RTC 1.1 (ORTC), TouchEvents and HTTP / 2, were added. Under the hood Edge is therefore the most modern, which is currently available in the browser market.

Performance

This also applies to HTML5 compatibility. Although Edge is about 10 percent behind Chrome and Firefox in the test of html5test.com, but fetches here in the month. The philosophy behind these efforts: less proprietary Microsoft technology, more open web standards. Microsoft has moved to a line that has long followed Chrome and Firefox.

Conclusion

In terms of working speed, the various browser benchmarks do not give a uniform picture. Striking is the very good JavaScript performance of Edge. In this discipline, the new Microsoft browser leaves Chrome and Firefox behind in most tests. In the all-round test, Peacekeeper Edge, however, is clearly behind the two stagards. The same applies to the second all-round test, Browsermark, where Edge is far behind Chrome. The poor performance of Firefox we attribute to a problem of the still quite young benchmark. Edge is always at the gas edge, scrolls even complex sides butterweich and has a touch more flotter than Chrome and Firefox.

Edge is a promise for the future, but so far at best a replacement for the aging Internet Explorer. Technically, it is the same as Chrome and Firefox, but in terms of functionality, and especially in terms of extensibility and configurability, it is clearly behind the old-used browsers.

Read mode facilitates the reading of web content. To this end, it brings texts into a uniform layout, removes advertising, etc. It is the only one of the three new features that convinces us because it fulfills its purpose and makes the web more comfortable. One reason for a browser change is the read mode but not. Firefox has it in Chrome, it can be upgraded with extensions.

The digital assistant Cortana is to provide additional information tailored to your needs. To consult Cortana, you must mark a keyword and click on the right button. Cortana then displays the result of a Bing query in a sidebar - with fluctuating quality. For example, if you only select a street name, Cortana does not automatically search for it in your area. It also needs a city name. Cortana has great potential, but is barely better than Firefox and Chrome's ability to look up selected text in a search engine.

Web page annotation allows you to add annotations to web pages. Similar to the PDFs you have been able to do for a long time, you can write text on a website, highlight details in color etc. The result should be shared with other users. From our point of view the function is useless: the text marker does not recognize text and is therefore unnecessarily difficult to control, the eraser works only sporadically and the announced function for "sharing with others" is missing. Only the local storage is currently working. Chrome and Firefox do not provide web page annotation functions.
