Fujifilm HS50 EXR in the test

The Fujifilm Finepix HS50EXR is a real brummer and weighs a whopping 820 grams. There is hardly any difference to the current small SLRs. But there are two very important differences. For bridge cameras, the lens is always fixed and the sensor is significantly smaller than with an SLR, which makes the huge focal range possible. And the Fujifilm Finepix HS50EXR is a bridge camera, even if it looks like a SLR camera.

24 parameters for the perfect image

Also the operation, the arrangement of the controls and the handling of the HS50EXR are like an SLR. The digital camera is very easy to hold on the rubberized handle, buttons and wheels are easy to use from the holding position. The marking of the controls is clear, of a comfortable size and the main control dial on the camera top is snug.

Swivel display

The possible positions are the known settings P, S, A, M, and C. In addition, six positions with different functions are available. A further setting wheel is located to the right of the main setting wheel of the HS50EXR. This is used to "move" through menu items and / or setting values. The buttons with a diameter of 6,5 mm have strong pressure points.

Grip controls

On the left side of the camera is a rotary switch for three focus settings. "Manual Focus", "Single Focus" or "Continous Focus" can be preselected here. This powerful latching switch has a button in the center. In manual mode, the magnifying glass can be activated. With the menu button in the center of the four-button you can access the main menu and the menu.

Sobering recordings

The main menu of the Fujifilm HS50EXR offers setting options on 18 positions, from the date to display settings, the basic settings of the camera are stored here. And the recording menu provides 24 positions for the recording parameters. There will be no open-up request.

In practice, however, it is just too time to dig up between the recordings in the menu and to change different values. With a quick menu, Fujifilm has solved this well. A "Q" button provides direct access to a range of important recording settings. And not enough. An Fn key can be individually assigned with one of 13 selectable functions. Pressing the Fn key will immediately activate the preselected setting. This makes the extensive menu quite handy.

The HS50EXR 3-inch swivel and swivel display has a resolution of 307,000 RGB pixels. The picture is razor sharp, colors are reproduced perfectly and the brightness is adjustable by 5 steps. So must be a display.

The FinePix HS50EXR's electronic 0.26-inch viewfinder also has a resolution of approximately 307,000 pixels, but the viewfinder is different from the display. Colors does not make it quite so clean, bright picture parts are always somewhat greenish. High contrasts are obviously causing problems, something flickering on the light-dark edges. Symbols and fonts are clearly visible on the display as well as in the viewfinder.

The focal length of the Fujifilm Finepix HS50EXR ranges from 24 to 1000 mm (KB). The light intensity starts at 2.8 and decreases at the long focal lengths down to 5.6. At the moment, it is not yet conceivable to cover such a focal range with an SLR optics - such an objective would have monstrous dimensions in the size of the sensor. Here the bridge cameras play their strength.

Despite the ever better functioning image stabilizers, the use of a stable tripod can not hurt at long focal lengths. A 58mm filter thread permits the use of filters, macro recordings are possible in the Supermakromusus from 1 cm.

Buying advice: The best compact cameras up to 200 euros

The Fujifilm Finepix HS50EXR's built-in flash fires at the touch of a button. If it is folded out, you have access to lightning settings. Back in the housing, the flash button does not allow access to flash functions. This is a good protection against faulty operation. An external, more powerful flash unit can be installed on the flash shoe. Fujifilm offers two optional devices, the EF-42 and EF-20.

The Fujifilm HS50EXR has a robust design, and a thick extra plus is available for the gripping design of the zoom and the ring for manual focusing. A further advantage is the side compartment for the memory card on the right side of the camera. This allows the best-fit camera to remain attached to the tripod and does not need to be unscrewed to change the card.

Test Conclusion

The EXR function of the Fujifilm HS50EXR is the last feature of the Fujifilm HS50EXR with which the contrast behavior can be improved. The newly developed sensor of the HS50EXR has taken over this feature from the previous models. Even difficult light conditions should be mastered with this function. Here, Fujifilm goes its own way, as is the case with the sensor format, which is located with a 1/2 inch diagonal between the 1 / 2.3 inch widgets and the 1 / 1.7 inchers Br>

How to find the right digital camera

All this is impressively impressive, and we were eager to see the pictures of the Fujifilm HS50EXR. The disappointment was all the greater. If the measured data could underpin the good impression of the camera, the visual assessment showed it merciless: The pictures are broken. Instead of tolerating a bit of noise - 1/2 inch diagonal are not a football field - the images are smoothed so massive that they lose any living structure. At ISO 100, the effect is still limited, but already with ISO 400 the HS50EXR lubricates completely despite its larger sensor. The faces of our models look as vibrant as a mask of the dead.

One wonders seriously what the developers have smoked during the programming work. Thus, the Fujifilm HS50EXR not only gamble, but certainly also many sympathies with dedicated photographers. There is only the hope that Fujifilm may be a better reflection and a firmware update, the worst processor artifacts. Until then, you can only work with the RAW format, which the camera is of course synonymous.

The Fujifilm HS50 EXR could be a top-of-the-line megoom camera. Would not be the broken pictures. What a pity.
