Sky Go now with HTML5 Player: Chrome users can breathe a sigh of relief

Many users of Sky Go had problems with the Silverlight plugin over the past weeks. The reason: Sky uses the Microsoft software to play off its online content. However, with Chrome version 45 in September 2017, Google removed the NPAPI interface from its browser for security reasons – blocking the Silverlight plugin. Chrome users had to switch to an alternative browser for Sky Go.

Sky Go thanks to HTML5 soon with Chromecast and FireTV support?

But here, too, there was a stumbling block: the Windows 10 standard Edge browser does not offer Silverlight support anymore. So there were only alternatives like Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer to view Sky Go content in the browser.

The end of the NPAPI interface has been a long time. And so Sky had already announced in June the switch to HTML5. After months of fun, the time has come: Sky has begun to change to HTML5. Users of browsers Chrome and Edge can access the Sky Go content with the new video player without additional plugins. On browsers that are still compatible with Silverlight, the old player is still used.

The change from Silverlight to HTML5 also promises good prospects elsewhere. Many Sky customers have long been waiting to use Sky Go via Chromecast, FireTV or the Kodi Media Center. Thanks to HTML5 this could soon become possible. For Sky Online, Chromeecast support is already available.
