Top Five: Five system cameras tested

We make the comparison test with five system cameras. The Canon EOS 7D, the Nikon D300s, the Fujifilm X-Pro1, the Olympus OM-D E-M and the Sony Alpha SLT-A77. The results of the practice and laboratory tests are more than just a surprise.

Canon EOS 7D

Similar to Nikon's D300s, the EOS 7D at Canon (1300 euros) is the leading figure in the APS-C department. Its stately magnesium housing is particularly effective against dust and splash water. Compared to the Nikon, the EOS with 18 megapixels has a bit more nominal resolution to offer. A flash unit is built-in and can be used as a master for wireless flashing, just like the competitor.

Technology

The 7D's SLR viewfinder provides 100 percent coverage and an effective magnification of 0.63x. The component of the viewfinder system is a translucent LCD, with which, e.g. Show grid lines in the viewfinder. The same is true of Nikon.

The 3-inch monitor shines with a high resolution of 306700 RGB pixels and is equipped with an ambient light sensor (7 brightness levels). In Live View mode, the camera allows the user to choose between phase and contrast AF. The Phase AF uses 19 cross sensors and can be configured in a variety of ways - from automatic measurement field selection via single-field to zone AF with five measuring ranges. The trigger delay including AF time is 0.33 / 0.44 s at 1000/30 lux.

In addition to multi-field and integral measurements (center-weighted), selective measurement (9.4 percent of the image field) and spot measurement (2.3 percent) are also possible. The iFCL exposure measuring system, in addition to brightness and object color, also takes into account the distance to the subject, Ready.

Two worlds meet with the operating concept: on the one hand, the classic data LCD on the upper side with associated keys, which, in combination with one of the two rotary wheels, allows the setting of recording-relevant parameters - on the other hand the TFT monitor can be used as a setting screen . For custom setups, the camera provides three memories that can be unbureaucratically selected using a program dial.

Image quality

The EOS 7D achieves a maximum limit resolution of 1491 LP / BH, which goes back without ISO jumps up to 1188 LP / BH at ISO 6400 without major jumps. The course of the dead-leaves values is similarly continuous. The texture losses (kurtosis values) slightly increase from ISO 100 (0.8) to 1600 (1.1). In the case of ISO 3200, a drop in the kurtosis to 0.6 is observed, where the noise increases significantly. The dynamic reaches maximum values by 9,5 screens (7 screens with ISO 6400). The bottom line is a picture quality at the level of the Nikon D300s, with a slight plus at ISO 6400.
