With CDex you can convert not only audio CDs, but also WAV files. It is also possible to convert from a source to a target format. The software CDex already contains many codecs, such as Ogg Vorbis, MP3 and WMA. In addition, CDex is also extensible with external audio codecs.
In addition, the tool names each individual piece of music equally well with song name, artist and album: This makes the later search or selection very comfortable. Change the quality level of the MP3 files to be created via "Options / Settings": "192 kbps" as the minimum bit rate is a good compromise between space requirements and sound quality.
Using the CDDB function of CDex, it is possible to retrieve title information from the inserted CD and to transfer this information directly into the ID3 tags of the generated audio files. Go to the "Remote CDDB" tab, enter your e-mail address and confirm with "OK". This entry allows you to automatically identify each individual song by online connection to this CD database and thus correctly name it.
In the CDex options, you can specify the location where CDex will store the created MP3 files in the "File name" field in the "WAV-MP3" field. Insert the audio CD created above and right-click the second button from the top ("Extract CD track (s) for compressed audio file"). In Windows Explorer, go to the previously specified destination folder to listen to the MP3 files, copy them from there to your MP3 player, or import them to iTunes. CDex also offers a normalization function (volume matching) and rudimentary functions for error correction. An extended error correction improves the chances that even older or scratched CDs can be read in without errors.
To save a CD as MP3 files, insert the CD into the drive and start CDex. Wait for the disc to appear as a single "track" and click "CDDB / Read from Remote CDDB" above. It takes a few seconds for the correct CD to be recognized and the song names to appear. Go to the menu bar with "Convert / Extract CD tracks to compressed audio file". You can also use CDex to record music from an external source that is connected to your sound card. An internal audio player is also available to listen to selected tracks on the music CD.
