Windows Server 2012 R2 is a dedicated machine for much more than just sharing files. If you’re smart, you’re looking for brand manufacturers that will provide support and extensions for a long time.
SSDs and hard drives
The operating system is the central domain controller, manages access rights, provides the intranet, and can monitor and configure other network devices, such as switches. Older applications and separate user groups work in virtual machines (VM). A server must be extensible to grow with the company. Therefore, it makes sense to rely on brand suppliers that offer long-term support. Also Xeon processors are not oversized, because Intel here for the same socket faster CPUs offers. The same applies to the main memory: Registered DIMMs with error correction via ECC provide a lot of RAM with low failure probability. With space for all mentioned applications and two VMs, you should start with 16 GB, which are spread over two modules - this facilitates later extensions. This also applies to hot-swap slots for hard disks.
Also, a lot of RAM can not replace a fast mass storage, therefore OS and the most important applications belong to an SSD. Particularly important databases or VM installations should be outsourced to a second SSD, data retrieved less frequently in large masses may land on hard disks. Essential is also a backup strategy of the entire server, for which a spatially separated NAS offers. But the network must be fast enough. When choosing between the rack server and the tower device, the spatial conditions are the most important, because there is not always an air-conditioned server room. This can be worthwhile if it makes sense to position the server, router and central switch together.
Whoever needs to maintain a fairly decentralized infrastructure because, for example, fast backbones are not available, runs well with several microserver. They are used primarily for file sharing - little traffic-intensive database applications can then run on a powerful central server.
