MIFcom Battlebox Smokin 'Aces Edition GTX970 tested

The Battlebox Smokin ‘Aces Edition is a test of what’s in it: a large GTA-5-style laser engraving allows you to view the mainboard compartment of Corsair’s Carbide-Air-240 chassis. The mini ATX motherboard B85M-G43 from MSI serves as the basis for the 1.500-euro computer with Intel Core i5-4690 and GeForce GTX-970 graphics card from Palit. The mainboard restricts: Little overclocking potential, limitation of the memory to a maximum of DDR3-1600 modules, no SLI network possible. After all, the Quadcore CPU is kept cold in the Battlebox by the H60-V2 water cooling.

However, the GeForce GTX 970 delivers enough power for all popular games in full-HD resolution: In the 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme the computer achieves 4.757 points. The result in the Systembenchmark PCMark 7 is also very good with 6,331 meters.

Conclusion

To the high application performance of the Battlebox Smokin 'Aces Edition also contributed the system drive: A fast Samsung 850-Evo SSD with 250 GB capacity. A Terabyte Toshiba HDD is installed as an additional data drive in one of the three 3.5-inch slots accessible from the outside via its own flap. The Corsair's 600 Watt power supply is also available in the drive compartment of the chassis. In our test device, Windows 8.1 was preinstalled in the 64-bit version. The basic equipment is missing an optical drive as well as a mouse and a keyboard.

The Battlebox Smokin 'Aces Edition looks spectacular, is pleasantly quiet and well equipped for all current games. However, we would have expected a motherboard with a Z97 chipset for a PC of this price class.
