Powerline adapter kits are common because they often carry the network into the corners of the house, which does not reach the wireless network of the router. To enable you to use WLAN clients, simply connect your old WLAN router as an access point to the Powerline adapter.
Step 1: WLAN Powerline combination
However, this only works if you turn the router into an access point. Some routers have an appropriate setting in their web menu. If not, you need to make the required settings manually.
Step 2: Router with access point mode
First, adjust the local IP address of the old router. Assign a local IP address, which is identical to that of your main router. However, replace the 1 at the end of the address with a 2.
Step 3: Customize the IP address
If, therefore, your main router has the local IP address 192.168.178.1, then your old router as access point will get the local IP address 192.168.178.2. Make sure that the subnet mask retains the value 255.255.255.0. Disable the DHCP server and accept the settings changes
Step 4: Correctly connect
Now connect the reconfigured old router to the Powerline adapter using one of its LAN ports, but not the WAN port. The device now works as an access point. You can access the web interface of the old router using the previously assigned IP address.
Practical: If you assign the same SSID and the same WPA2 passphrase to the old router for the old router, you do not have to make new WLAN settings for the access point in any of your WLAN clients.
