Interview: Timo Schneckenburger about HD +

T. Schneckenburger: The number of our customers continues to grow very dynamically. We are currently seeing lower increases only in households in the 12-month free phase after an HD + card has been put into operation for the first time. By switching off the analogue satellite transmission last year, a lot of set-top boxes were sold in 2012, including many HD + devices. In 2013 the market declined sharply, this slump affects the entire industry and thus also us.

Video: HD + has 1.28 million paying viewers and nearly 2.7 million users. However, the growth curve is already flattening somewhat. Is there already a kind of saturation?

T. Schneckenburger: We can not say absolute figures, but HDisierung is an ongoing process. Of course, the potential is growing with every HD-capable TV set that is shipped and with the notoriety of HD broadcasting. We also expect further growth from the new Ultra HD TVs. Finally, there is as yet almost no corresponding content and also the interface and transmission technologies are emerging. Nevertheless, a good picture is to be seen on the Ultra HD TVs with 60, 65 or more inches. For this purpose, content in HD is not only important, but also imperative. This is because the new TVs are capable of extracting HD material in good quality into the new Ultra-HD format.

Video: How do you rate the potential for HD + in the United States?

T. Schneckenburger: We have noticed that there is still a lot of information to be asked about the broadband viewers. In the past we used to advertise TV spots with beautiful pictures and films. In our current advertising campaign, "the United States is doing the HD check", on the other hand, we are campaigning on a fundamental awareness raising on HDTV. We actually went to the living room and asked the people: How do you watch TV? How do you receive your TV program? Do you look in HD?

Video: What keeps the distribution of HD content on TV in your opinion the most?

There is still a lot to clarify with the people. And often I get the impression that it is not clear in the industry or in the trade that one has to draw attention to the subject of HD at a much more practical, life-oriented level with a large number of viewers. To put it figuratively, we have to go down and out of our industry ivory tower.

Video: But back to the ultra-HD-affine video reader. When will there be a kind of Ultra HD + of the first private broadcasters in the United States?

T. Schneckenburger: Good question - you have to be patient with the answer. We do not even have standards on the receiving side. The only provider that has so far been known to the public for ultra-HD content is Sky. With its claim as a premium transmitter it is understandable. But apart from that, there has been no operational hustle and bustle at the stations. In this respect, we have the question of whether there will be an "Ultra HD +" or not, so far neither internally nor with the private individuals discussed.

Ultra HD - The new generation of television

T. Schneckenburger: Sure, it would be a nice present. But this decision lies with the broadcasters - and it is clear, for example, with the media group RTL: They will not be able to receive and receive their broadcasters in HD without HDTV network operators and on any IPTV platform. Also not for HD +.

T. Schneckenburger: HD + RePlay was first started with a very small bouquet, as a kind of technical soft-launch. Until further stations their Mediatheken could connect, it unfortunately took longer than originally planned. This is why the offer has been so manageable so far that we have not yet begun to scale sales of 3-month packages. For a few days now, the Mediatheken of ProSieben, SAT.1, kabel eins and DMAX are available in the package. In between we have a technical range of approximately 300,000 HD + TV receivers, and will have HD + RePlay next year also as an app on LG and Hisense televisions. Now we are also launching the marketing of HD + RePlay - and measuring the success.

T. Schneckenburger: The offer is completely independent of the HD + Smartcard, so it can of course be integrated into any Smart TV. We are open to any TV manufacturer that incorporates the package, while respecting our specifications regarding the rights management and streaming.

Practice: Apps for video streaming

T. Schneckenburger: This is especially about digital rights management and the streaming format.

T. Schneckenburger: With quality and the extensive offer. Once you have looked at the content of the media library from the Internet - on a small laptop or pad, perhaps still look good - on a large TV screen, you will appreciate the picture quality with HD + RePlay on the domestic TV. This quality, for example for the high-quality streams, is of course associated with technical effort - and thus also with costs.

Also the transmission contents are not offered 1: 1 with advertising breaks. There may be a 30-second clip before or during the show, but no longer an advertising island. Whether or not the media advertisements show, but is the decision of the channels anyway. The Mediatheken of the Pro7Sat1 group for example did not integrate advertising. It is also practical that anyone can test the offer without obligation on their device for three months before it costs.

Video: And for the archivists among the video readers: Would not it be a nice Christmas gift for the many loyal HD + customers, if you can finally record the private HD channels indefinitely?

T. Schneckenburger: This is primarily a question of rights. Of course, we are thinking about this and we are also in close contact with the stations.

T. Schneckenburger: Neither, nor did, when we thought about interactive applications for HD +, did we do some market research. It turned out that the TV viewers of an on-line service on the TV most often wish that you can watch a missed program later. This is exactly what we have implemented with HD + RePlay for the private individuals. Maxdome and other online video stores pursue another, equally valid business model with which we do not want to compete at all. Our clientele are not the end-of-season or movie-goers, but rather the viewers, who usually watch the live program of private TV stations.

Video: HD + is also active in the area of smart TV - for example, with HD + RePlay, the paid mediatheque bouquet of the private ones, which has just received an increase from DMAX and the Pro7Sat1 group. How many paid 3-month packages have HDX already sold?

Practice: Sat-to-IP - Satellite TV by network

T. Schneckenburger: We are aware of the contradiction. It is less on the do not want than on the technical implementation. Encrypted satellite signals can not be transmitted via the IP network. The implementation is only possible with quite a lot of effort. We're off, but I can not say when HD + broadcasts can be transmitted and decrypted via satellite IP.

T. Schneckenburger: Finally at home to be able to receive satellite TV, this is one of my greatest wishes. Unfortunately, this is not so easy to do because I live in Munich with my family in a listed building.

Video: Is it planned to integrate HD + RePlay on other smart TVs as well?

Video: What kind of specifications are they?

Video: HD + RePlay sends content that has already run in similar quality - ie in SD resolution - in free TV. Partially, there is also advertising. How do you convince customers with these objections?

Video: HD + RePlay in its present form acts as if it were limited to a device. Mediatheques are in doubt also practically on tablets or even on the PC. Is this planned for HD + RePlay?

Video: HD + -Replay is indeed a portal with flat-paid mediatheken. Package offers with at least partly comparable content are also available in a completely different way - such as Maxdome, where you can see at similar prices TV content as well as feature films on demand. Is this a competitor or rather an inspiration for HD +?

Video: The 2013 introduced HD + app offers a great, free program guide and a satellite IP client for the iPhone or iPad. The real HD + but is not usable via satellite IP, although both techniques are advanced by Astra - what is the?

Video: A question to the conclusion: What accessory or device for television do you want for Christmas?
