Medion Akoya P7818 (MD99160): Opinion about the new Aldi notebook

Aldi South brings a new laptop and here we read our opinion: The Medion Akoya P7818 (MD99160) will be available from 6 June 2013 for 499 euros on the shelves of the discounter chain. In January, the Aldi notebook was still available for 599 euros. The device is a handsome 17-inch device that weighs three kilograms. This makes the P7818 less suitable as a constant companion for the road, but rather as a restricted mobile desktop replacement for the home. The MD99160 device from Aldi is basically the successor to the MD99075. The housing is exactly the same, with similar weaknesses in the processing.

Medion Akoya P7818 (MD99160) - Conclusion

The new MD99160 comes with an Intel "Core i3" instead of an Intel "Core i5" processor for a price that is now around 200 Euro cheaper than the MD99075. The Intel Core i3-3110m is a dual-core and clocks 2.4 GHz without turbo mode. In the previous model, it was 2.5 GHz, which the overclocking mode could automatically lift to 3.1 GHz as required. Both Ivy Bridge processors share Intel's HD4000 graphics unit, which is suitable for office, Windows and less demanding games. In addition, Medion is still dimensioning the main memory with 8 gigabytes of DDR3 RAM and the hard disk with a terabyte: enough for the multimedia everyday.

Users have to make cuts on the second, dedicated graphics card in addition to the CPU. Previously, the Geforce GT 645M was used for many games, so the Geforce GT 730M is a "rebranding" - a new version - of the Geforce GT 640. The chip offers less power. The possible game restrictions are therefore more likely. If the user is willing to do without expensive graphic details for current titles, can be played smoothly on the 1,600-by-900-pixel display. Gamers should not look too optimistic about the future.

The performance is sufficient for almost all multimedia applications, films and TV. For this is installed a DVD burner. The display is non-reflective and is therefore suitable for outdoor use on the balcony when the sun is shining. No power supply is required for this. The battery will last a good three and a half to four hours. The laptop comes with Windows 8 in the 64-bit version, a card reader as well as all important interfaces including HDMI and twice USB 3.0. In addition to the above, you will also find a power supply, a Windows 8 Recovery DVD and another data carrier with Medion software.

If you are looking for a price-performance-oriented multimedia notebook for your own home, a good conscience can strike. In addition to the processing of the housing and the light weight, which was not easy for every user, the relatively low resolution of a 17-inch diagonally disturbed us. Here, Full HD support (1920 x 1080 pixels) would have been more beautiful. For this, the Medion Akoya P7818 (MD99160) with an anti-reflective display, a large hard drive and a strong battery.
