Mobile phone lost or stolen: location apps for iOS & Android smartphones

Here you can read what you can do if you do not find your phone more. Was it stolen or lost, apps for iOS and Android. Allows you to locate, lock, and delete sensitive data.

Step 1: To enable the service at Apple and Google

If you lost your mobile phone, you often have the uncertainty about the question of where to look for it and when exactly it was lost. Thanks to two manufacturers who have made use of WLAN and GPS in the development of their services, they can be faced with a more optimistic situation in the future with a little more confidence.

Step 2: Locate the mobile phone and retrieve it

Apple and Google offer the location via iCloud or Android device manager free of charge. The prerequisite is that the services have previously been activated on the mobile phone. Note: Localization apps only work if the battery is not empty and the thief does not turn off the phone, or even reinstalls the operating system.

For iPhone from iOS 5, select "Settings" on your mobile phone, go to "iCloud" and "Search for my iPhone". Activate the option with the slider. For Android version 2.2, go to the "Google Settings" and search the Android Device Manager. Tap and set a check mark to "Remote Locating for this device" and "Allow remote lock and reset to factory defaults."

Step 3: Bring or lock the phone

A further step is necessary because the device manager only works if it is authorized as an administrator. To do this, go to the "Settings" of the phone, select "Security / Device Administrators" and set the check mark to "Android Device Manager."

If you can not find your mobile phone, log on to the respective website of the services. You'll need your subscription details, the Apple ID for iCloud, the Google Android account. With iCloud, select "My iPhone", the locating starts automatically. You do not have to do anything with the Android device manager, the phone is automatically detected when the page is accessed.

The services show the approximate location on a map - up to a few meters. Apple works well, the Google service hacks some users still. For example, if you use an old Googlemail instead of a Gmail address as a Google account, you will often get an error message. This is the only way to change the address.

The tools from Apple and Google can do even more: the phone for several minutes in full volume to ring, for example, even if the sound is off. This helps if the mobile is still somewhere nearby.

The iPhone is called the "play sound", it is however like the other features something hidden. On the map, click the green dot that indicates the location of your phone, and then click the "i" for information. On Google, the "ring" option is one of three choices on the web page (next to Lock and Delete). If it does not ring close, you should lock the phone as a precaution. For iCloud, select "Mode, Lost". Now you can specify a phone number under which you are reachable, as well as a text.

Both will be shown on the display of your iPhone, if an honest finder gets in your hands. This will automatically lock the iPhone. For the Android device manager, select "Lock". You can set a new password to unblock - iCloud and Android can do this remotely.

On the other hand, the erasing of the data is obligatory. To do this, click "Delete iPhone" on iCloud and "Delete" on Android Device Manager. All data on the device is irrevocably removed after a warning

Free is the Windows tool "Prey", which is also available as an anti- theft app for mobile phones. It can record the activities of a thief: what programs does he use, what data does he see? Over the webcam, Prey secretly takes pictures. This information can be viewed through your Prey account - if you have installed the tool in advance.

The American company Code-No.com is based on honest finders. It sells hard-to-remove stickers with QR codes and a note (from six euros) that are glued to the bottom of the mobile phone or notebook.

Step 4: Delete the phone remotely
