The S-Voice: iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 in the language duel

The S-Voice in the comparison test: We have the language duel between iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3. Apple since the iPhone 4S with the integrated voice control Siri for its smartphone. With the Galaxy S3, often referred to as an “iPhone killer”, Samsung strikes into the same score. And that makes you curious, because a functioning voice control makes a lot of sense for mobile phones.

The S-Voice: Detailed practice test

In the operating system Android, which uses the Samsung smartphone, a (recognized bad) language control was integrated earlier, with S-Voice, Samsung now has its own solution directly against Apple Siri. But are these two approaches really practical? Do they work only under optimal conditions or in the noise of a trade fair? How does dialect or genuineness affect the detection performance?

Siri in test: Only a few commands are recognized

We tested the speech control of the two test persons with the latest firmware and latest software updates for the test period, using 25 selected test questions. The Telekom subsidiary T-Mobile provided us with both LTE cards with both LTE cards. This is important because neither Siri nor S Voice work without an existing Internet connection.

S-Voice in test: good integration with Google Maps

The test questions were asked at the same time by different test persons to both smartphones - once without background noise, once with a proper noise level from an air conditioning system. We also wanted to know the implications of blurred pronunciation, dialect or disturbance factors such as audible throat clearing. So we took a number of other samples.

The S-Voice: Conclusion

The result was sobering: Apple's Siri - under optimal conditions - showed at least 15 of the 25 desired reactions. Siri achieved full score with the dictation functions: An SMS or a note wrote Siri fast and correct and also the correct telephone number found the Apple program in turn. The built-in smartphone functions can be accessed via Open Contacts or Open the camera as well as the preinstalled Dropbox

Siri did not answer the question about the remaining battery life. No success was also given to our attempt to control the commands Say louder or speak a little quieter the volume. We were also able to increase our hit rate in questions related to navigation.

Siri correctly gave all petrol stations nearby and listed 15 restaurants nearby as required. In the wrong, however, the command Go to spiegel.de - Siri navigated to the village mirror. On the way to the next S-Bahn station Siri - the next station appeared.

The language control of the Galaxy convinced even less - even after each three attempts per test question and tester. S-Voice offered three nearby airports, found the location precisely, or responded correctly to the local time. In almost all cases, however, S-Voice responded with an Internet search for a search term, even the question of the weather in Tokyo overwhelmed the Samsung language module.

Only exceptionally, a voice command led to the desired goal: Contacts opened S-Voice just as willingly as the settings of the integrated camera or the downloaded Dropbox app. How Siri was lost in the answer to "How is the weather tomorrow in Aying"? Always a false place with prediction appeared. In addition, the Galaxy S3 responded noticeably slower than the often twice as fast iPhone 5.

Air up is with both test candidates. The test victory in the discipline "voice control" goes however clearly to Apple's Siri. However, a detection performance of around 60 percent is not approaching what Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking has been doing since program generations on the PC. The language control of both manufacturers is quite unimpressed by background noise in outdoor samples, but they failed due to an unclear pronunciation - Siri, for example, then listed restaurants in Austria instead of nearby.
