After the program start, it first checks the data carrier. The “Recuva Assistant” appears. It is useful if you want to search for specific document types, such as pictures or Office files. If you know the name of the missing file or at least some parts of it, do not allow the wizard to start automatically. To do this, check the box next to “Do not show the wizard at startup”, click “Cancel.”
Specify where Recuva Portable is to search for deleted files. However, Recuva Portable can not process CD and DVD discs. If you do not know the location anymore, choose "I'm not sure," but the search time is bigger.
Afterwards, Recuva Portable presents the found files in a clear list or - similar to Windows Explorer - in a tree structure. The status column shows which files can still be saved and which are not ("unrecoverable" means "not recoverable"). Set checkmarks to the files you want to restore the tool, then click "Recover."
The "Advanced Mode" of Recuva Portable offers some interesting extra features. To start Recuva Portable in this mode, disable the wizard, or click Advanced Settings in the File menu. In addition to the magnifying symbol, you can now type the name of the file you are looking for (such as "test.txt") or a part of it (such as "test"). Or search for specific file extensions, such as "* .txt". Restore is then done as in Wizard mode.
The application comes from Piriform, which also develops the CCleaner tool.
