Teufel Central AV / Columa 300 in the test

They are looking for the ideal home cinema: it should be complete with 5.1 discrete channels as well as six – also optical – discrete sound transducers. They already have a Blu-ray player and want to stream music from the web. Then this devil set would be for you.

Central Station

Central AV / Columa 300 in the 5.1-set L version (so with stand-up speakers) and a TV set - you do not need to enjoy with your Blu-ray player home cinema. If you also want to stream music via Internet radio, you need to add a Raumfeld Connector 2.

Devil's core competency

The special feature of this Devil's Combi: The components and therefore the functions of an AV receiver are integrated in the set. All six amplifiers required for the home cinema are housed in the subwoofer. The Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD master decoders are plugged into the DecoderStation 7, which can be used as a decoder preamp with remote control as a decoder preamp with its two digital and three analog audio inputs as well as the volume control

Hearing test

The small central AV control unit thus brings together all feeders and ensures the setting of the parameters in the home cinema. The menu is clearly structured and therefore easy to understand.

Conclusion

Fortunately, one finds three HDMI inputs and a corresponding output for the image output. Thus all parameters, such as the runtime and the distance of the speakers to the listening position, as well as level settings can be set up via screen assistance.

Buying advice: The best surround sets with stand boxes

The small decoder / preamplifier should not be set too far away from the subwoofer, since six RCA cables must connect the 5.1 outputs and inputs of the two devices. If you want to record your sound with 7.1 channels, you can use the two assignable line-out jacks to connect a pair of active speakers.

Alternatively, these channels can also be used as an additional sound system for bathrooms, kitchens or terraces - for example wireless via Devil's RearStation4. A compulsory FM tuner may be missing as well as the headphone output on the back.

With the Central AV / Columa 300 series, the Berlin box builders have sent a compact complete solution with slim column speakers. As a version 5.1 set L, the customer gets four four-inch aluminum pillars for front and rear, only 4.5 centimeters wide, and the aluminum profile has been shortened to 39.2 centimeters for the center channel Millimeter-sized bass as well as a 19-millimeter-sized tissue cap has been retained.

All aluminum speakers are closed, but the subwoofer is not. By far the largest component of the set has a gross volume of 45 liters and contains a long-stroke chassis of 25 centimeters diameter. The two downward-facing bassreflex apertures are slotted. In order to give the reflex construction the necessary air space to breathe, the housing is raised to four aluminum / rubber feet, which dampen the resonance.

The amplifier section is also integrated. 40 watt Class-D power is available for each satellite, while the bass chassis in its own home is able to access a whopping 180 watts. By the way, the US 4110/6 SW is only available as a component of a Teufel set: if you have already thought about disposing your old AV receiver but wanting to keep your old boxes.

Buying advice: The best soundbars

In the listening room, the correct settings such as phase, level and transient frequency were found. The manufacturer's recommendation to set 150 hertz as a cut-off frequency seems to be well-chosen: if you let the small bass chassis play deeper, that is at the expense of the already low maximum level of the satellites

150 Hertz pickup are, however, locatable, so it is recommended to position the woofer in the front area between the center and one of the two front speakers. Only in this way does the upper bass sound like a single piece. Vertical bundling of the pillars is limited, which makes the height of the sitting position uncritical.

In the hearing test the Teufel-Kombi convinced by broadband playback down to 35 hertz. The sound level of the deep regions can also be heard. 111 decibels almost undistorted volume in the bass are already considerable. The tonality of the four pillars is very good, but the center does not come quite close to it, but it can score with the language comprehension.

The monologue of John Travolta at the beginning of the thriller Password: Swordfish proves this impressively, while the subwoofer may show its potential after the explosion. But also the quiet sounds like Livingston Taylor's Is not She Lovely convince: The voice sounds nice warm, without hissing, the guitar clearly structured.

One has to leave the Teufel-Kombi: it creates spectacular home cinema scenarios. If you look at the somewhat limited maximum level of the satellites once, the set plays balanced in the tonality, deep into the frequency cell and level-resistant in the bass. Add to that the elegant look - apart from the subwoofer. And the whole thing gets you at a more than reasonable price.
