Acer Aspire S13 S5-371-78W2 in review

The Acer Aspire S13 S5-371-78W2 is the cheapest Ultrabook with a price of around 1,000 euros in this comparison test, but can still offer the competition. That is why it gets the price-performance crown. A few compromises, such as the housing material, must be considered. Acer uses a plastic cover for the ribbed display cover, a magnesium alloy on the underside, and aluminum around the input device. As a result, the Aspire S13 S5-371-78W2, which is 16 millimeters thick, does not feel as high as the metal competition, but it is stable. Also the illuminated and fixed keyboard as well as the large touchpad give no cause for criticism. Acer chose a 13.3-inch diagonal and full-HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) for the display. It makes images very bright, and since it is anti-reflective, you can even use it outdoors.

Fast Core i7 and 512-GB SSD

For the 1,000 euros you get a whole lot of equipment offered at the Acer Aspire S13. Like the Dell XPS 13, it has an Intel Core i7-6500U and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM installed. But instead of the 256-GB NVE-SSD, the Acer Ultrabook has a SATA-III SSD with twice as much memory space (512 GB). There is also much to offer in the interface department.

Conclusion

They have USB 3.1 Type C, two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, a card reader, WLAN-ac and Bluetooth. Nowadays it is hardly necessary for the daily mobile use. In the performance tests the cheap Ultrabook moves in the front midfield. The PCMark 8 also ends with the second best result (2,710 points) as the 3DMark Cloud Gate (5,801 points). With the Cinebench R11.5 it is nearly equal to the Dell XPS 13 (9350) thanks to a result of 3.54 CPU points. Only during the transfer rate test of the SSD occupies the Acer-Ultrabook the last place: 448.5 MByte / s are however criticism on a very high level. Overall, the Acer Aspire S13 offers more than enough power for office software, media playback, ambitious photo and video editing as well as simpler games. Noticeable: The fan noise can only be heard under high load. Otherwise, the Aspire S13 is very quiet. However, the 11-hour marathon run time announced by Acers in the run-up is a far cry from the 1.27-kilogram weight.

In the battery test of the PCMark 8 the power of the 45 Wh battery was only for 4:16 hours. This is the lowest run-time value in this comparison test.

The Acer Aspire S13 S5-371-78W2 is for good reason the price-performance winner. Here, at a relatively low price, high performance, good equipment and processing quality meet.
