IFA 2017: HDR is more than a marketing slogan

20th Century Fox presented the world’s first Ultra-HD Blu-ray with HDR at the Samsung IFA show “Kingsman”.

More vibrant colors, the best possible contrast and a truly black black: With HDR, the picture quality of TV sets can be further improved visibly. And that is what consumers always want first of all when they ask market researchers for a new TV: a better picture. This IFA 2017 therefore leaves a very pleasing balance in Berlin. HDR is not just a new sow, which is driven through the village, as some media like the headlines of the IFA. HDR is here! All well-known manufacturers, as well as some who want to become still, have HDR-compatible Flatscreens announced for this fall: Samsung with its SUHD TVs like the premium series JS8090, LG among other things with the new OLED models 65EF9500, 55EF9500 And 55EG9200, Panasonic with the new flagship TV TX-65CZW954, or Sony with the 4K TV series X94C, X93C, X91C, X90C, X85C and S85C. Sony is also still a drauf and brings in October with the VPL-VW520ES the first HDR-capable 4K-Heimkinoprojector on the market.

And on the content page? Of course, there are not thousands of HDR movies to choose from. This is the case with new technologies. But tenor in the industry is: High Dynamic Range is the greatest image enhancement effect for many, many years. Clearly more visible than the pixel multiplication by 4K. And that is why film studios and TV stations are very serious about this issue. 20th Century Fox has already implemented a first handful of feature films in HDR and announced already in the summer to bring all novelties to HDR in the future. Amazon Prime Instant Video is available as "HDR streams" with "Transparent" and "Mozart in the Jungle" as well as the pilot sequence of the coming comedy series "Red Oaks". Competitor Netflix stated in Berlin that the VoD service will begin with HDR streams in 2017.

HDR transmission over HbbTV 2.0

The EBU, the organization of the European TV stations, announced at an IFA event from LG, in the foreseeable future Einzlevents in HDR to want to transfer. It showed the specialist audience a demo in the context of which the research and development area of the British BBC transmits HDR content to LG 4K OLED TVs. The transfer is done using HbbTV 2.0. MPEG DASH, an adaptive bit rate streaming technology, is used for this. This allows HDR content to be streamed over the Internet and deployed on traditional http Web servers. LG also introduced a transmission of HDR content via satellite via SES ASTRA in Berlin. At the IFA stand, LG also provided HDR content via a BROADCOM set-top box, which refers to HDR content via HDMI.

In order to get HDR from a physical medium, it needs the new Ultra-HD Blu-ray Disc. However, with all HDR euphoria, however, there was some disappointment at the IFA. Samsung was the only manufacturer to present a UHD Blu-ray player, which will also be released in spring 2017. The Koreans decided to skip the Christmas business in 2017, as there are as yet no discs available. Fox was only the "Kingsman" as the first UHD BD in the context of the Samsung novelty show. From Panasonic, which presented a player prototype in January at the CES, it was said at least during the course of the show that they would also bring a UHD device to the market. All other potential manufacturers, however, have been totally silent.

Conclusion

All activities from the hardware and content pages show: HDR is not just a new abbreviation from the marketing departments of the industry. HDR is a reality, will give the TV market a decent boost and quality fans will deliver a much better picture experience. A little patience, until devices and content are sufficiently available, would be absolutely worthwhile in this case.
