Smart phone calls

If I tell you, he’s so … “” And then he said that … “” Anyway, he can … “Alexander Graham Bell, who is considered the co-inventor and first producer of market-ready telephones , Would turn around in the grave, he would get so much conversation in the times of wireless telephone systems and fixed net flatrates.

The Internet helps you to make calls from

The phone has probably changed the company more strongly since its introduction in the second half of the nineteenth century than the electronic communication in the last 15 years.

Always accessible via Skype

E-mail, online shopping or news sites can only speed up and supplement only processes that already existed - such as the mail-post, mail-order catalogs or newspapers. With the phone, however, people were able to talk about thousands of kilometers for the first time, as if they were facing each other. Together with the telegraph, this was the first technology for global networking.

Connect the landline and smartphone

This is not intended to question the achievements of the Internet or home networking. On the contrary: for many decades telephoning was a self-evident, always the same activity: to choose, to connect, to speak. In the meantime, modern data networks have not only revolutionized the spread of texts, photos or music, but also replaced the hand-held local talk.

The smartphone at home

For a long time a participant hardly ever telephoned via analogue telephone wires, more and more calls are handled via Internet data connections. In most cases, the user does not receive any information, and the voice of his opponent continues to sound. However, what happens between the two terminals is often pure Internet technology.

New connections at the Telekom or with Vodafone today are operated at least in cities usually over the Internet Telefonie (Voice over IP), if the customer does not explicitly contradict this. Who calls his telephone connection over a TV cable network operator, always calls by IP technology.

But you can also telephone directly over the Internet - without any special telephone connection, only with a fast online access. The best example is Skype. The communication service creates different direct connections between its users: text messages, voice or even a video call.

In the simplest form, using the Skype program on your computer, you register as a Skype user and manage your customer account. The whole thing does not cost anything as long as you call someone from a Skype account.

But Skype also offers paid additional services such as answering machines, a telephone number to be accessible from the normal telephone network, as well as conversations with normal telephone connections. And you can also "scypen" over other devices such as Smart TVs and special Skype phones regardless of the computer.

Even smartphones can be upgraded with special apps to Skype phones, which allow at least within local WLAN networks free phone calls via the Internet. Who uses the service completely, can almost do without the telephone connection. The advantage: Via Skype one can reach everywhere under the same user name or the same telephone number. These data remain even when moving to another city or abroad.

But to make the phone more flexible, it does not have to be a complete switch to Internet telephony. Clever telephone systems also shorten the communication channels, for example, by combining fixed-line phones and mobile phones. Since the triumph of smartphones, their networking talents and apps, there are many ways to bring together the various systems.

Why should one keep an eye on the mobile phone and the fixed network at home, if it is easier? Some manufacturers offer phones that handle landline and mobile communications. Mobile phones are connected via Bluetooth to the base station of the domestic DECT telephone. This takes then calls by fixed net and mobile radio, but only the connected cordless phones ring.

Smart phone contract rather than fixed line?

In addition, you can choose for your own calls, whether the call is to be conducted over the fixed line or the mobile phone contract. This is handy when you have a fixed-line flat rate in the conventional connection and calls with the smartphone contract free of charge in a certain mobile phone network. Devices with this technology are currently available from Philips and Telekom.

The combination works however also differently: telephone systems can use smartphones for fixed net calls. The best example of this is the system of the FRITZ! Box router of the American provider AVM. Some FRITZ! Box models are DSL and WLAN routers as well as DECT telephone base stations.

These telephone systems have a direct connection to the domestic data network and offer practical additional functions. For example, iPhones, iPads and Android smartphones can be used as handsets using the free app FRITZ! Fon: If the app is active, the smartphone also rings for fixed-line calls. Of course, you can also call to the landline via the app.

One such function is also the Telekom with the App HomeTalk. Prerequisite: The telephone connection must transmit voice connections via the Internet. The corresponding Telekom tariffs are called Call & Surf IP and Entertain IP. The app is free to have for iPhone, iPad and many Android devices. Telekom customers can tap into their domestic Telekom connection with the app even with friends, if they also use a Telekom-IP connection.

The FRITZ! Box has even more smart functions in stock. FRITZ! Box answering machines store messages digitally on a local memory. On request, they will automatically be sent by e-mail. For example, the news can be received and listened to at the office on the PC or on the road on the smartphone.

If you are on the road and you are living in a single household, you can even get it without a fixed line connection. As an alternative to this, there are fast mobile Internet access and flexible voice tariffs for the mobile phone companies. O2, Vodafone and T-Mobile offer so-called Homezone contracts. This includes, in addition to the mobile phone number, a fixed-line number, which allows the user to reach fixed tariffs at home and within a radius of approximately two kilometers around the place of residence.

The whole costs as a rule approximately five euros surcharge per month to the mobile contract - less than a stationary telephone connection. For families, the offer is not intended as the home zone tariff and the associated landline number are always assigned to only one handynummer. There is no mobile phone company sharing a family.

Another point is against the pure mobile communications connection: anyone who uses a Smart TV, a home control system or other networked devices at home requires not only a local network, but also direct access to the Internet. There is now also in the mobile radio - not least through the ultrafast LTE network. But uncomplicated and usually also cheaper is in the long term a DSL access. And also a smart fixed-line telephone has something - for example, for long-term calls among girlfriends.
