Six color laser printers from 320 euros in comparison

The purchase of a color laser multifunction device should be well thought out, because such a multitalent is not a disposable article like so many ink printers under 50 euros. A color laser all-in-one is usually an investment for the near future, depending on utilization and contracting average for 3 to 10 years. It is already worthwhile to plan the planned development of the own document volume in the next few years.

Then you should determine the size, the equipment and the throughput of the planned printing press. Printer models are available in countless equipment variants for every requirement. A later retrofitting can often be expensive, as a glance into the accessory shop of the printer manufacturer quickly reveals.

The test field from 320 to 650 euros

Whether an additional paper cassette, additional memory or retrofitting cards for further interfaces: The original accessories of the printer manufacturers, which one is generally also compellingly dependent, usually weighs the money bag more than if one were equal from the outset for one or the other extra Decides to choose a somewhat more expensive equipment variant of the planned printer model. For this reason, please inform yourself about the suitable variant on the Internet or in your system house.

Special features of the test candidates

The size of a color laser all-in-one, and you usually look at its height, says nothing about its performance or the cost. It is only determined by the installed printing technique and the paper path provided by the manufacturer. For example, we were able to give the Samsung "Spartipp" the "Spartipp" seal at the current road price of about 360 Euro

Our conclusion to the comparison test

Here, the price-performance ratio and the equipment, among other things with an automatic duplex unit convinced. In addition to the main functions of printing, scanning, copying and faxing, the equipment of the models in our test field is still different. This is why you should check with the technical specifications of your favorites before purchase.

Test: The best color laser printers

The fastest way to do this is via the manufacturer's website. Through the links to the products you get to the description of the specifications or the technical characteristics of the respective model. In most cases, you will also find several equipment variants and the same basic model.

Each device in our test could have positive but also negative features.

So the Canon iSensys MF-8080CW scores with a WLAN interface as well as very low energy costs. Also very practical is the drawer, where you use the color cartridges with little time and without much professional knowledge. Unfortunately, the 150-sheet paper cassette is very small for a network printer and is designed for low side-throughput, which also confirmed the lowest print speed of the test field.

At the output speed, the WorkCentre 6505 from Xerox clearly had the nose ahead. Quickly the first page in the output tray and the 23 pages per minute could only top the Lexmark all-in-one. The printer works clean and very color-accurate. The only drawback: with laser-coated paper the printer had problems.

The toner does not stick evenly to the paper (Color Laser Photo Paper, Glossy, 150g / m2 from Konica Minolta). With an additional USB interface on the front, PDF documents as well as JPG and TIFF images can be printed directly from a USB stick, and the same data formats can also be scanned directly onto the inserted, accepted stick

With the Lexmark X544n, all direct scans on the stick are only saved in PDF format, the memory stick can be printed with files or photos in PDF, JPG, GIF, BMP or TIFF format. The toner change at Lexmark is very simple. The cartridges are similar to large ink cartridges and are similarly placed under the foldable top of the device.

The control panel at the printer is clearly labeled, the two-line, monochrome display but quite small. With 21 watts in quiescent mode, the Lexmark is the energy eager of the test field.

The Brother MFC-9320CW proves to be very "connection" -freudig. With USB 2.0, LAN and WLAN, as well as a PictBridge and USB host interface, the All-in-One fits almost any office environment. And there he does a good job.

The text image is edge sharp and well blackened, even with color documents is nothing to complain about. A draft mode is, however, in vain. The print speed of 17 pages per minute is still acceptable for this class, especially as the Brother is very fast with the first page, no matter whether color or text only.

Our Spartipp, the Samsung CLX-6220FX, is a bit longer on the market, but has lost its attractiveness with regard to price and consumption costs nothing. With its dimensions and the rather heavy weight, the bolide is less suitable for the desk. It is recommended to have your own stand or station in a printer room.

Test: WLAN Multifunction Devices

This is not a problem as the Samsung has a USB interface for cable-connected integration into an existing network. With its built-in automatic duplexer, you can print on two sides in a paper-saving way.

The large multi-purpose tray on the front holds up to 100 sheets of plain paper and several envelopes. For the page price, whether black-and-white or color printing, the model could not be beat by the other test participants using the largest possible compatible cartridge.

Despite the time-consuming initial installation, which still took almost 25 minutes on our current, fast test system, the Color LaserJet CM2320fxi from HP was able to achieve the test. The HP has already integrated an automatic duplex unit for the economical double-sided printing in the standard version. This model variant is also supplied with a second paper cassette.

The user has two individually selectable paper trays for a maximum of 250 sheets of plain paper each. In addition, the multipurpose drawer can hold up to 50 sheets or more envelopes. The HP does not have an additional USB port for direct printing from the Direct Scan to a USB flash drive.

For this purpose, card slots are available for all standard memory cards such as SD, Memory Stick, CF or xD for direct photo printing on the card front. The very clear control panel of the HP is dominated by a foldable, 6 cm color display for the status and menu display.

The distance from the test winner to the sixth place is only seven points. This means that despite a profit margin of about 300 euros, a balanced test field will close. But also in this test field there were ups and downs to assess. If the Canon consumes only 1.8 watts in sleep mode, the Lexmark is sleeping at 21 watts. This fact, however, is again decisive for a different result.

Guide: To print from a network

Because the Canon needs 26 seconds for the first page, the Lexmark is ready after 13 seconds. The Lexmark simply does not need to heat up as long as the Canon. So the Canon is more suitable for low-end printers, the Lexmark is for printers with little stand times the better alternative. Our HP test lab offers a large stock of paper with its two cartridges, which is important for network printers.

These are usually not at the workplace, so that the paper consumption is not always in the eye. The 150-sheet cartridge from Canon is therefore very unsuitable for a network printer. Even a 250 cartridge is already questionable, especially since you have to constantly share a standard package of normal paper with 500 sheets. Samsung could score in our test field with low follow-up costs.

In order to keep them as low as possible, you should always use the largest cartridge unit suitable for the unit. Here the price / performance ratio is best for all test candidates, even if a large toner substitute the budget for the moment strongly loaded. All test equipment and their main functions are well-engineered, the print quality is partly very good, never bad. The operation of the devices is manageable after a short training period, the toner change is completely uncomplicated.
