Synology NAS as a media server

Owners of a NAS system from Synology are available in several ways to make the multi-media files stored on the network storage network-wide available. We’ll show you how Synology’s Media Server works.

Step 1: Log on to the NAS system

Log in to your NAS system by tapping the IP address into the address line of your browser and confirming it with the Enter key. Then enter the credentials and continue with "Log In."

Step 2: Install Media Server

Click on the desktop icon "Package Center" to open the dialog box of the same name. Select "Multimedia" in the left column and click "Install" to download and download this component in the "Media Server" section of the "Media Server" area.

Step 3: Save Settings

After the installation, click the "Open" option. In the "General Settings" section, select "German" in "DMA Menu Language" and confirm the change with the "Apply" button.

More about streaming

The media server now provides all the multimedia content stored in the default "music", "photo" and "video" folders throughout the network. If you have saved your files to other directories, you can add these folders by clicking on "Media Library" under "Applications" in the "System Control". On the Indexed Index tab, select Create, click Select, select the directory to be added, and then click Select to confirm your selection.

You can quickly check that everything has worked out: Open the Windows Media Player and take a look at the list of other media libraries. Your NAS system should now appear. Now you can select the desired media file and start playing it.

Step 4: Add Media Library

Step 5: Open Windows Media Player
