VirtualDub processes the enormous amounts of data very fast and works well even with large videos. The quality of the audio level with VirtualDub can be improved by an audio controller. The processing of image and sound can be performed separately in VirtualDub so that, for example, optimizations to the audio playback quality of the film are possible without impairing the image quality. The result of all changes is displayed immediately, so that an immediate assessment of the results is possible.


Due to the enormous range of possible settings, the operation of VirtualDub is not quite trivial and requires some training. Anyone familiar with VirtualDub will also appreciate the sophisticated keyboard and mouse shortcuts for efficient work. VirtualDub is also particularly well suited as a digital video recorder for recording the TV program via a TV card.


When recording, VirtualDub is clear even with crooked resolutions such as 352 x 480 pixels, which the driver of the TV card itself does not offer. For compression of the recorded video material, all audio and video codecs installed on the PC can be used as real-time compression. Capturing allows up to 70,000 frames in a single pass. The audio input can be controlled by the audio meter (volume, oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, line-in slider).


To avoid the recalculation of the movie and sound when editing the video with VirtualDub, set the "Direct stream copy" option in the "Video" menu and the "Audio" menu. The brightness and contrast can be changed by means of a video histogram. With filters it is possible to make changes to the entire video track. These include, for example, scaling, rotating, trimming, synchronizing, and sharpening.
