A big disadvantage of Whatsapp is history: The messenger gets – at least once for Android – an end-to-end encryption for messages. This is announced by the Open Whisper Systems security organization, which is cooperating with the Whatsapp operators to integrate TextSecure’s encryption protocol into the messenger.

The iOS version does not yet support the protocol. It remains to be seen whether Whatsapp users on iPhones can look forward to the security function. TextSecure for Whatsapp encrypts outgoing messages all the way to the recipient.

Thus, cybercriminals or secret services can not easily read the transmitted texts. The Whatsapp operators themselves do not have direct access to the user's own user's code.
This works so far for single chats. Group discussions or the transmission of pictures and videos are not yet encrypted. However, TextSecure's makers are already working on how to encrypt such communications, as well as compatibility with iOS. There is no more information on this.
