Malwarebytes employees have identified a responsible company after a typical attack via support scam (telephone fraud), which should actually be serious. In detail, it is about a former official sales partner of the company Symantec, which is known for Norton Antivirus. The fraudsters simulated an error message on a PC and promised help by telephone with a simultaneous remote desktop connection. After a few clicks, among other things in the shallows of Windows with harmless error messages, the employees of Malwarebytes should purchase Symantec software from around 200 US dollars – a multiple of the normal price.
The security experts were able to identify the originator of the support scam: a company called "Silurian Tech Support", based in the US state of Wisconsin, about the provided payment form that the alleged victims of malwarebytes should use. Searches have shown that this company was in the past in the Symantec partner program. The company was therefore authorized to sell Symantec products and provide official support. Malwarebytes has taught Symantec about the incidents and finds. Symantec said the problem was solved quickly. A short time later, Silurian's website went offline.
Support Scam is a fraudulent attempt to simulate an error message on a prepared website. Supposedly the computer is infected with pests and a professional should urgently keep an eye on it. The wrong warning message also provides a telephone number, behind which a supposed support staff should wait. In the end, it is often expensive to pay for the software - often there are expensive security software from well-known brands, as well as subscriptions to support for security problems.
You can also prevent such attacks by an awake eye with an anti-virus software - by the way, Norton Antivirus, which you can download as a trial version as a download. Alternatives can be found in our antivirus test 2017.
