LKA Niedersachsen warns against Ransomware
Almost simultaneously with the Landeskriminalamt (LKA) Schleswig-Holstein also the LKA in Lower Saxony warned against Ransomware pests, which are currently intensifying the round. Both warnings against those blackmail Trojans are common, that they camouflage themselves as online cover letter, as well as offer of offer from supposed applicants and / or customers. In both cases, cybercriminals refer to additional documents via a dropbox link.
If the LKA in Schleswig-Holstein still warned general blackmail Trojans, which encrypt the data and only released against payment, the LKA in Lower Saxony provides information about a novel Ransomware. The so-called Chimera pest not only encrypts data on the attacked computer as well as on connected network drives, but also threatens with a publication of the decrypted data should the victim not pay a ransom. This is especially harmful to companies and small businesses, but also to private users.
The ransom should be transferred in the anonymous online currency Bitcoin. The equivalent value of the Loan Loan (2.45267544 Bitcoins) is currently (09 November 2017) at more than 830 Euro. The e-mail addresses with which the harmful dropbox links are distributed should come primarily from the domain "@ emailn.de". While the US FBI in many cases advises to simply pay the ransom, the communication from the police in Lower Saxony has a different approach. It is unclear whether decoding is possible at the moment. In addition, there is no guarantee that the cybercriminals will release the data without problems if the victim pays.
Anyone who has caught Chimera should report to the police. The state criminal warns that many anti-virus programs Chimera currently do not recognize. So, be aware of the dangers and refer family members, friends, and, if necessary, employees, more e-mail attachments, and especially Dropbox links. Make backups so that encrypted data is not lost.
