If you want to send data online, you probably think of the e-mail first. However, with large amounts of data streams, different providers are allowed, which only allow a maximum of five to about 25 megabytes per e-mail. What if holiday video, pictures or music of your own exceed this limit? Our guide shows you how to share your works with friends and relatives without having to split files, so they have to split and send them individually.
Dropbox as a digital packing station
The e-mail is not only the most popular Internet application, but also the oldest service on the global network. At the beginning of the nineties the e-mail began its triumph. Originally, the system was only designed for the exchange of messages - dates were added later. Due to the limited bandwidth of the early Internet and the way of the mail transfer, attachments had to be very small.

Images and other documents were compressed before sending. Too big e-mails were simply rejected when sending through the mailserver. Basically this still applies today. Many providers do not allow the sending of e-mails with large attachments and block such messages.

But what should you do if, for example, you want to send photos from the last vacation to friends? Thanks to the high resolution of modern digital cameras, a few GB of photo material can be assembled quickly. Such large data packets do not come in the mail, but are made available to the recipient on an online hard drive.
Use the Telekom Cloud
The e-mail contains only the information where the data packet is ready to be fetched and the corresponding access data. The following tips show different platforms and solutions for sending large amounts of data.
Users of Dropbox can send data to any user with Internet access using online storage. For members of Dropbox, simply share a directory or a file. Then send an e-mail notification to the other user. To do this, right-click the directory you want to share in the Dropbox folder. From the context menu, select "Share this folder."
Dropbox then launches the web browser and opens the folder in the web view. Confirm the used e-mail address by clicking on the blue button "Send e-mail". Open your e-mail account and click on the activation link. On the following screen, under "Invite Team Colleagues to This Folder", enter the e-mail address of the recipient. In the field below, write a message if necessary.

The "Allow members to invite others" option is enabled if the recipient is allowed to share the directory with other people. If you only want to share the directory and data in the recipient, uncheck the checkbox. End the share by clicking the "Share folder" button. Releasing a directory affects all of the recipient's end-users.
The data is synchronized with all computers - this also applies to possibly equipped smartphones or tablets. If the recipient does not have dropbox access, you have the possibility to share files and directories via the web browser. Open the drop directory on your computer and locate the folder or file you want. Click the right mouse button and select "Get Link" from the context menu under "Dropbox."
Dropbox opens a new browser window and displays the contents of the selected directory or the file to be released. Copy the link from the address bar and send it by e-mail to the recipient. It can then access the data using the web browser. Note: The data is then unsecured for anyone on the web. If the link comes into the hands of third parties, they can also access the data.
To cancel the sharing, log in to Dropbox on the web browser. On the left, click on the "Links" entry in the menu on the left. Dropbox shows all links for links in the next page. By clicking on "Remove", deactivate the share for the corresponding entry. The link is immediately disabled by Dropbox and is no longer accessible to other people.
Similar to Dropbox, Microsoft is working with Skydrive from Windows Live. The online hard drive from Microsoft is free and offers up to 7 GB of storage space for documents. Data can be stored with Skydrive's web browser or desktop connection. Apps for iPhone, iPad and Mac are also available free of charge. Log in to Skydrive - in the overview you will see all the stored directories and files

Tip: Shorten long web addresses
When sending, you have two options below the message box. With "Recipients can edit items", give the recipient full access to the selected file or directory. It has the possibility to change or delete data. Enable the "Everyone who accesses it must log on" option, the recipient must have a Skydrive account for access.
At Strato HiDrive you get 5 GB of free hard disk space as a starting offer. If you log on to the web page, large files are immediately available to you.
Use the web browser or the desktop extension to transfer data to and from the online hard drive. For more information on how to integrate the HiDrive drive on the desktop, please refer to the Online Service Help. This also applies to the HiDrive apps for smartphones and tablets.

To access the web browser, log in to HiDrive and click on the "Filemanager" tab in the middle of the main screen. Go to the file you want to share. Right-click to open the context menu and select "ShareFile". In the field "Validity in days:" you determine how long the link should be active and in "Maximum downloads:" how many times the user is allowed to download the data. The protection of the link with the file with a password is not available in the free version of HiDrive.
Click the "Create" button to create the web addresses. You can find pop-up windows in the "Share link:" field for the shared file. Mark the link with the mouse and copy it with the key combination "Ctrl + C" to the clipboard.
Start your e-mail program and write an email to the recipient. Use "Ctrl + V" to insert the address with the download link and send the message. The user can then access the file saved with HiDrive according to your specifications.
T-Online users not only have an e-mail address at the Telekom, but also a data store for large files. The Telekom Cloud works similarly to Dropbox and Co. It is not only available to customers of the telecommunications giant. Everyone can register for the use of the on-line store. In the web browser, go to the Telecom Cloud page and sign up for free using the Telecom Media Center.
25 GB of storage space is available on the Internet. Data is uploaded to the server using the web browser or you connect the Telekom Media Center as a network drive to your PC. For more information, see the online help service.
If you want to share large files with other people with the Telekom Media Center, please refer to the "4 steps: Share with Telekom Cloud" box.
If the memory space becomes scarce, you can purchase additional memory. However, savings are different, without deleting or extracting data in the cloud. There are other providers that provide you with free storage space. You can also use it as a temporary storage or for sharing with other users.

Most vendors also have apps for synchronization with mobile devices. These include iPhone, iPad, Android devices, but also BlackBerry and Windows Phone. Sharing files and directories with other users over the desktop works in the same way as the solutions presented.
When creating addresses for downloading large files, sometimes very long addresses are created. These are not only unclear, but can also not work through line breaks in the e-mail at the recipient. Such addresses are difficult to "put together" and then transferred to the web browser via "Copy / Paste".
It's more convenient! Before you paste the address into the e-mail using the clipboard, just shorten the address with an online service. Copy the long address to the clipboard and open the browser's web address http://bit.ly.
Paste the long address in the "Paste any URL" field, then click the "Shorten" button. Copy the new address from the input field and transfer it to your mail. If the recipient clicks on the short link in the message, bit.ly simply redirects to the destination with the long address.
To send data via e-mail with only one web browser, yousendit.com is available. For the service you need a free registration or use a Facebook account for the registration. In "Your EMail" is the address of the sender and the "To" the recipient's e-mail. Clicking the "Select File" button opens a file selection.
After selecting the file to send, clicking on "Send it" will start the transfer. If you want to add a message to the recipient, click the arrow to the left of "Add a personal message". Complete the embedded form. In "Subject", write the subject and "Message" the message to the recipient.
To send multiple files you need a paid account at Yousendit.com. Alternatively, simply pack files into an archive and send the package. In addition to sending data, the free version of Yousendit.com also offers 50 GB in the network. The data at Yousendit can be accessed from anywhere with the web browser via the Internet. In addition, there is a desktop app for the service.
