Medion Akoya E7424: Aldi laptop in a bargain test

The Medion Akoya E7424

The Medion Akoya E7424 (MD 60150) will be available from Aldi Nord on 26 January. We reveal whether the new laptop is worth 499 euros. For this, we take a look at the hardware and equipment in our bargain test. In advance, our main criterion: the screen could be resolved at a diagonal of 17.3 inches higher, 1,600 x 900 pixels are not enough. This results in blurred representations for the given display size, and symbols and window elements are unnecessarily large in the case of poor software optimization. Full HD with 1.920 x 1.080 it should at least be.

Less critical, we see the use of DDR3 RAM in the Medion Akoya E7424, although an Intel processor of the new Kaby-Lake generation is installed. A bit more than 4 GB of RAM would have but with the otherwise strong hardware including SSD already can be. An Intel Core i3-7100U is used as the processor, which has two cores, which can execute four processes at the same time via hyperthreading. Windows 10 Home runs so fast on the 128 GB SSD. However, current and complex programs could quickly reach a bottle neck when using multitasking in the RAM.

The Medion Akoya E7424 otherwise offers a second hard drive with 1 TB capacity. This is sufficient for a small media library, work results and other files. If you want, burn this to DVD or CD. The integrated burner supports DVD-RAM and dual-layer discs. Alternatively, you can transfer data via USB 3.0 to an external memory or via a Gigabit LAN or WLAN-AC to a network memory. There is no lack of current connections. The laptop offers 2x USB 2, 1x USB 3.0, HDMI, audio, Gigabit LAN and VGA for communication with other devices. Only one input in the format USB Type C as a Dreingabe would have been a bit more future-oriented and thus desirable.

The mobility of the Medion Akoya E7424 with 17.3-inch screen is questionable. The 44-Wh battery will unfortunately not provide for endurance records. Medion has a duration of 4.5 hours. We think it is realistic for about three hours for average use. If you use simple casual games or elaborate image and video processing programs, you should be able to plug into the power socket after two hours.

Conclusion

As desktop replacement, the Medion Akoya E7424 provides enough performance for everyday use with office, web and games for between. When multi-tasking with up-to-date and complex programs, 4 GB of RAM, however, should quickly become tight. On the road, neither the weight of 2.7 kilograms nor the size (42 x 27.9 x 2.8 centimeters) or the recharge time are suitable. Medion offers Windows 10 Home, test versions of Office as well as McAfee LiveSafe and multimedia tools from Cyberlink and preinstalled Windows apps. If you can live with the restrictions, the Medion laptop is an acceptable offer. For alternatives, you can look into our test of notebooks up to 500 euros.
