Facebook at Work - Alternative to Google Drive, Xing and Co.?

Facebook is working on a new social network for companies and is launching the official test phase of Facebook at Work. According to a report from the Financial Times, the new tool gives companies the opportunity to use known Facebook features like the Timeline, news, groups, or events for their own social network.

After a company has been provided with a license at Facebook at Work, only employees can log into the company network. This makes it impossible for outsiders to see what is shared by the company. Unlike the normal version, Facebook at Work is not available for free.

For this, the tool promises to be free of advertising and, according to its own statement, does not collect any data about the participating companies. In addition, data traffic is protected by encryption technologies such as Strict Transport Security (HSTS) and Perfect Forward Secrecy.

With this new feature, Facebook would like to make it easier not only to simplify everyday office work but also to eliminate internal e-mail services and messengers. Thus, the social network attacks e-mail services such as Microsoft's Outlook or the enterprise social network Yammer. But also career networks such as Xing or LinkedIn would make the new feature competing.

Facebook at Work should appear both as an app for iOS and Android in the download platforms as well as for the desktop PC. So far, the pilot project has only been made available to a small selection of partner companies for the test phase. When Facebook at Work is made publicly accessible and which costs are to be incurred for the function is still unclear.
