Amazon Prime: No mandatory annual fee for testers

Existing Amazon Prime members do not have to pay the annual fee of 29 euros. The District Court I Munich decided after an interim injunction of the consumer service Bavaria. Amazon had failed to point out to customers that a “free test” of Amazon Prime will be converted into a paid membership after the trial period.

Amazon Prime actually offers a free and fast shipping of many items that are offered at Amazon. With the "Test now free" button, however, customers involuntarily concluded a paid membership - this can no longer happen in the future. However, the judgment is not yet final.

"We are delighted that Amazon is now offering the membership of 'Amazon Prime' through a button that clearly shows that membership is paid," said Jochen Weisser, lawyer at VerbraucherService Bayern. According to Hottovy's calculations, Amazon achieves a third of its operating profit through Amazon Prime.

For the Internet retailer, it is now necessary to ensure that, when appointing the membership, it will be clear in the future that this will be paid after the end of the test period. Therefore the corresponding buttons have been adapted. Customers who ordered Amazon Prime via the "Try for free" button are not required to pay the annual fee of 29 euros.
