WLAN router & client secure set up with WPS - that's it

We show you how to set up your WLAN and connect different clients such as Smartphone, Tablet, Smart TV and Co. to your router: Although the convenient WPS setup method is now widespread, the classic connection method is still valid. The WPA password is a bit cumbersome, but it works in doubt with all device combinations.

WPS-PBC: connection with K (n) öpfchen

All WLAN routers (access points) and WLAN clients as of the 802.11n standard now support the convenient connection method WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). This is a standard that makes it much easier to set up a secure WLAN wireless network.

With WPS, you save yourself the annoying and unfortunate entry of the long WPA passphrase ("WLAN password") into the WLAN client. WPS distinguishes between two methods: push-button configuration (WPS-PBC) and WPS PIN.

WPS-PIN: The worse alternative

Tip: Test your Internet speed with the connect speed test!

With WPS-PBC, you can do the entire connection process by pressing a button or clicking on the WLAN router and the client to be integrated. The successful WPS activation on the router is often indicated by a flashing light (LED). Important: The WPS PBC function is only active for two minutes. The connection can only be achieved if you enable the router and the client as quickly as possible.

If the access point has transferred the access data to the client, the encrypted, wireless connection between both devices is established and the WPS mode is terminated in both devices. For the integration of another client, repeat the complete process.

Note: Sometimes the WPS PBC method does not work until the second or third attempt, or when you change the order. Also, the distance between client and router should not be too large.

As an alternative to the button printing method (WPS-PBC), many WLAN devices offer a connection method via a PIN (Personal Identification Number). To do this, enter an eight-digit number sequence, which is usually installed on the bottom side of the WPS-enabled access point, in the WLAN adapter wizard. Alternatively, the WLAN client can also specify the PIN. This must then be entered in the user interface of the router.

However, unlike WPS-PBC, the PIN procedure is not a real convenience to connect a WLAN client to the access point. In addition, if the router specifies the PIN, WPS PIN can pose a significant security risk.

Whether it is a smart TV, Blu-ray player, game console or media player, more and more devices of modern entertainment electronics (UE) are equipped with a LAN port, as well as a WLAN module. The connection to the router can also be handled with these devices via WPS-PBC (see tip 1). In this case, you can use the remote control to switch to the network settings of the UE device, select WLAN or Wi-Fi as the network access, and then activate the connection via WPS.

After the WPS router, which is also activated, transmits its access data to the UE client, the encrypted connection is established. This basic scheme is similar to all WLAN-enabled UE device types, although the menus and terms used by the respective manufacturer may differ. If necessary, search for the keyword "WPS" in the index of the manual.

If the connection to the router does not work with WPS, you have to enter the WPA passphrase via the remote control via the remote control. Practical: Some UE devices with a USB host support the connection of a keyboard. This makes complicated input much more comfortable.

Connect your printer wirelessly

Many network-compatible printers are now equipped with WLAN. Most of these devices can easily be connected to the router via WPS-PBC. In order to use the printer in the home network, you must install the software included in the printer on each computer. In addition to the printer driver, this usually also includes a setup wizard, which deals with the search of the printer in the network and the subsequent setup on the corresponding computer step by step. Important: You must set up this device on any computer that wants to use the WLAN printer on the home network.

All smartphones can be connected to the router via WLAN, although the newer smartphone models already support the WPS method. If you have a Fritzbox router with integrated telephone system, you can use the free app "Fritzapp Fon" cheaply on the smartphone over their own landline or VoIP connection. The Android or iOS smartphone must be simply connected to the access point of the Fritzbox. After the installation of the Fritzapp it is sufficient if you enter the access data of the AVM router once in the smartphone - and already the smartphone is registered as an additional telephone device in the telephone system.
