The replacement of the Nikon D600 by the Nikon D610 comes quite quickly, the camera has been but only more than a year on the market. Even though the D600’s technology proved to be a test, the full-format DSLR had a negative image because of the initial problems with sensor pollution – possibly one of the reasons for the fast model change.
AF system and continuous image speed
The equipment of the new Nikon D610 offers only partial improvements - on the whole the inner life is already known from the D600. The 24.3-megapixel CMOS image sensor of the Nikon D610 works together with the image processor Expeed 3, which is already used in the D4 and the D600. The standard ISO range of the Nikon D610 from ISO 100 - 6,400 can be manually extended from ISO 50 to 25 600 on request. The ISO auto setting can be restricted to a specific range. First test pictures with the Nikon D610 are already promising.
Exposure functions
Also the basic data of the locking system of the Nikon D610 remained the same. This achieves exposure times of 1 / 4,000 - 30 s. The closure unit is designed to withstand at least 150,000 tripping procedures and has a self-diagnosis function. However, according to Nikon, this is a modified closure unit.
Image control and video functions
The autofocus of the Nikon D610 still works with the Nikon AF module Multi-CAM 4800 with 39, 21 or 9 measuring fields. His minimum sensitivity is EV -1. With AF modes such as dynamic measurement field control and 3D tracking, the Nikon D610 also satisfies difficult moving motifs. In Live View mode, the D610 operates with contrast AF and AF tracking.
Robust housing
At the serial speed, the Nikon D610 has slightly added. The camera creates a maximum of 6 fps. A novelty is the "silent series recording" function - the QC setting on the mode dial mode dial. With this type of recording, the camera lowers the mirror-beat speed and thereby eases audibly quieter. This is at the expense of the serial image speed, which is here at a maximum of 3 images / s.
The Nikon D610 also uses its 2.016-pixel RGB exposure meter to optimize the motion for optimized exposure control. The motive analysis is also used to support the AF system, for example in the 3D motif tracking of smaller objects. Exposure compensation offers + -5 LW scope.
Nikon's Active D-Lighting - and an HDR function, which help to contrast difficult subjects, as well as various picture-style options. Interval and time-lapse recordings are also possible with the Nikon D610. The camera-based editing options include options for D-Lighting, RAW processing, and filter effects. You can also use the D610 to create a distortion and perspective correction, as well as setting start and end points for movie clips.
The 3.2-inch LCD monitor (8 cm) with 306,666 RGB pixels and an optical glass prism detector with approximately 100 percent image coverage and 0.7x magnification are available for image control. In LiveView, a virtual horizon supports the orientation of the camera.
Buying advice: Editors' favorites - DSLRs up to 3,000 euros
The video functions of the Nikon D610 remain unchanged. Full HD videos (1080p) can be recorded with 30, 25 or 24p, with 720p 60, 50 and 25p are possible. The D610 also offers stereo headphones and stereo headphones. For image control, the D610 can output an uncompressed live view stream at 1,080p to external recording devices via the HDMI output.
The Nikon D610 has 113 x 141 x 82 mm and 850 g unchanged dimensions. The case comes with deck and bottom caps made of a robust magnesium alloy. It provides moisture and dust protection. The layout of the controls is the same as the new series recording function.
A battery charge of the EN-EL15 lithium-ion battery is enough for about 900 photos or 60 minutes of video. It is stored on SDHC / XC cards with UHS-I support, for which the Nikon D610 as the D600 has two card slots. The function of the second card slot can be adjusted as required.
A WLAN module does not offer the Nikon D610, but with the optional wireless adapter WU1b pictures can be transmitted wirelessly on smartphones and tablets as well as the camera remote controlled by them.
Price and availability
The Nikon D610 is expected to be available from the middle of October 2013 for the price of 1,950 euros. The kit price with the AF-S Nikkor 3.5-4.5 / 24-85 mm G ED VR is 2.500 euros.
