QNAP TS-451 tested: Strong network hard drive with media player

In power-saving mode, the Qnap NAS’s power consumption drops below 14 watts.

Conclusion

The 4-Bay NAS QNAP TS-451 accommodates 3.5- or 2.5-inch drives. In addition to JBOD and RAID-0, RAID modes 1, 5, 6, and 10 provide data protection when internal hard drives fail. For the file format, Qnap sets Ext4 in its operating system (QTS 4.2.1) and (but not yet) to Btrfs or Zfs. Encryption with AES-256 is volume- or folder-based. Equipped with four 3.5-inch disks, the NAS is idle at around 31 watts, while the fan buzzes with an acceptable sound level of 31.2 dBa (1 m).

Additional Information: Qnap TS-451 + -8GB

The read and write rate of the NAS at one of the two LAN ports is as high as expected in the 8 GB RAM model we have tested, each with 117 MB / s. The spontaneous transcoding and streaming of videos on network clients succeeded us with MP4 files at least to the 4K resolution (h.264 codec). Other common video formats (MKV, M2TS, TS etc.) could not be converted. The NAS also offers the NAS as a Mediaplayer with the NAS app Kodi, the supplied remote control and the HDMI output (up to FullHD resolution).

The TS-451 + delivers performance and functionality (NAS apps). The transcoding, which works well in comparable QNAP models, should be adjusted by the manufacturer for this NAS in the next firmware version.
