Samsung NX200 - Review

Like the Sony NEX-7, the Samsung NX200 records with a CMOS in the APS-C format, which is now with 20 megapixel nominal resolution also not of bad parents, price 760 euro.

The Samsung NX200's case is also made of metal and is particularly light, but also slightly less solid than the competition. At the front, the body is molded into a handle that provides less support than the Sony NEX-7. Instead of a flashlight a small flash is included. In vain, however, you are looking for an interface for an electronic viewfinder - why actually, if you were offered the option NX100?


NX200 is equipped with a 3-inch monitor, the resolution is 204666 RGB pixels. However, the monitor is not tiltable.


Functionality & operation The NX200 is equipped with the program dial. In addition to the standard programs (P, A, S, M), Samsung also offers the "Intelligent Auto" (Smart), Scene Programs as well as the operating modes Video, Panorama and Magic (filter and frame effects). One of two function buttons (iFN) has been placed on the lens housing, above the AF / MF switch.


In the case of the Samsung, the 4-way switch is combined with a setting ring, and a second setting wheel can be found at the top of the housing to the left of the program dial where it can be operated with the pointing finger. The buttons of the 4-way switch are also used twice. The Fn button on the right above the 4-way switch is used to display the setting screen, which shows all essential functions and recording parameters. Settings can be made directly by means of a wheel. A special feature of the NX200 is that the bracketing function can be extended not only to exposure and white balance, but also to picture style presets (standard, vivid, portrait, landscape, etc.). That is, the camera takes three shots with pre-defined image styles.


For shooting, the Samsung needs 0.43 / 0.45 s (1000/30 Lux) and is thus behind the competition of Sony NEX-7 or Panasonic Lumix GX1. The Lumix with 0,26 / 0,29 s (1000/30 Lux), with values, which would be an honor for every SLR camera with phase AF.


Also, video function with a separate start button is not missing from the Samsung. It films with 1920x1080 pixels and 30 full-screen images in seconds.


Image qualityThe Samsung NX200 is superior to the Sony NEX-7 with ISO 100/400 in terms of the resolution, ISO 800 is the difference, and with ISO 6400 the Sony is almost 300 LP / BH better. The low DL values ​​from ISO 400 are striking in the results of the Samsung. The loss of texture is noticeable from ISO 1600 (2,2). The Samsung is also protected from ISO 800 with noise and dynamics.


Conclusion: The 760 euro cheap Samsung NX200 is worth their money, despite weaknesses in the picture quality in the higher ISO range. Annoying that the new has no interface for an electronic viewfinder.
